LD20 Framework and Tool Declarations
Getting ready for Ludum Dare!
I’ll be using AS3, like I’ve done for previous Ludum Dares. Unless somehow I get an idea that would be better in 3d, in which case I will go with Unity.
Music: Coding theme song. Level design theme song. Gaps filled by Pandora.com.
Food: It has become part of my Ludum Dare ritual to go nuts buying snacks before LD weekend.
Framework: Stego, the as3 framework that’s been grown out of the reusable parts of previous compos.
IDE: FlashDevelop.
Graphics: I’ll be doing pixelly sprite stuff in a copy of Photoshop CS 1 which as far as you know was obtained completely legitimately. I’d like to start doing more vector-based stuff, but I figure for LD I’d better stick with what I’m used to.
Music: I will probably mess around with GreaseMonkey’s music generator like I did for LD19. I’ve also used Wario Ware DIY and Wolfram Tones in the past and those kind of worked, so if for some reason I’m not liking what I’m getting out of one tool, I’ll switch to another.
Sound Effects: SFXR and/or BFXR.
Timelapse: Keeyai’s Chronolapse. It’s worked great so far.
Sauce Control: Mercurial, pushed to a repo on Bit Bucket.
Twitter: @ExciteMike
Interweb pagesite: http://excitemike.com/ Has my games and stuff.
Plan: At present, I am leaning toward doing something extremely simple, even for an LD game, but then have lots and lots of levels. I’d also love to make something multiplayer, but I don’t think people tend to have friends nearby when they go to play or rate LD games. Hmm, that sounds kind of sad when I say it that way. Point is, while multiplayer is often super fun, fewer people will be able to enjoy my game if it needs two willing people in the same room.
Ahhhh…. *Turn off Chronolapse* … *Scratch-self*
Done finally done!
In hindsight, I guess my feature list was pretty ridiculous. Seriously… a social game?… bah…
On the bright side in the last hour before submissions I was able to pare things down a bit, and get all of the semi-working features tied together.
Learned tons this LD, the timelapse was a great motivator / distraction.
Post-mortem and timelapse with some sweet cat-stop motion going on in the background, coming soon!
Oh and one last food photo
I made it!
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 7:01 pmAlright! I am now submitted. Somehow when I started, I thought that I would have enough energy to port the game to windows after 9. Ha! No way that is happening, I am going to go to bed and curl up with a comic book.
I feel pretty good about my game, there are mechanical, aesthetic and experiential issues, but I think it is fun for at least 2 minutes.
Here is all the food that I ate and forgot to post:

cabbage rice and egg

breakfast 1, kix

kale and rice

more cereal
Dinner time with not much time left to go!
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 1:45 pmI’ve been slightly worried recently on if my game will be allowed as it’s based on copyrighted stuff. I’ll find out soon if it is or not I suppose.
All menus are done and now I’m getting the final pieces finished and then I need to remember audio!
I’ve got work tomorrow but I won’t be giving up
5 hours left!
Short *late* lunch break
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 7:22 amWhat a healthy breakfast…
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 3:22 amSo I’m now deep in art land as well as front end flow county, as I just realised how many screens I’m going to need, hopefully it’ll all be in there in the end, maybe these mousse’s will help me keep going
I also woke up a bit late today which I’m not happy about
but then I did go to bed late.
Only another 15 hours to go!
Alright dinner
Saturday, December 18th, 2010 12:21 pmDuck and Hoisin sauce pizza with curly fries and garlic bread along with some yummy apple and elderflower juice
Finally got the collision working how I wanted, although now I’ve gotta make sure the collision then works the same for the opponents AI too. Really need to get started on the graphics for the game though.
The Leftover Breakfast of Champions
Nuking what was left of last night’s grub.
Hoping for a “Most Mundane Food” award. Nice slop of tofu sausage, corn and mash potatoes. I don’t know where you guys find the energy to make fancy foods right now.
I’m thinking if I can nail all of the mechanics between midnight and 3 AM tonight I’ll probably be able to start integrating DB stuff into the game, otherwise I’ll be polishing a single player game : /
Homemade pizza time
Saturday, December 18th, 2010 8:02 amYummy!
Saturday, December 18th, 2010 6:41 amLate breakfast
Saturday, December 18th, 2010 4:57 amWhile waiting for the Tesco man to deliver this week’s food (was at the cinema watching Tron last night so couldn’t do the shopping) and hoping he doesn’t get stuck in the snow I thought I’d have the only breakfast type thing I could find. Especially as I was starving hungry, which Nigella on the TV isn’t helping with while she’s making a yummy cake.
Game is coming along ok, I’m worried maybe it’s a little too simple, but I’ll keep on with it
Can’t wait for dinner of some take-away variety, although worried nowhere will be delivering
Desk Photo! Unmade Food Photo!
Friday, December 17th, 2010 4:13 pmYup! I am so ready to roll. I couldn’t sleep this morning so I got up early and started reading game design blogs.
Also this morning, I purchased 40 pounds of satsumas. So I will probably eat some of those this weekend.
Also, I kinda buried my link to my base code, so here it is again.
Late lunching
Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 7:58 amSo I managed to get around the big issue I was having with my game
*yay* so now I think it’s just polishing up everything art wise and recording some sfx and making some music!
I’m having a late lunch, but then my breakfast was around lunch time anyway
but my teeth have been hurting like crazy, I’ve got a couple being sensitive and playing up, and it’s not helping with my concentration, hope they feel better soon
Hopefully the cheesy beans will get my mind off them
lunch

late pic of my lunch as my internet is back
Mo’ Progress!
It’s all coming along pretty well, I’ll have some screenshots to show in a little while, but all the physics are finally cooperating… using a full 3d physics engine for a shmup might have been a bit much, but I think it’ll allow for some cool effects when I get to the polishing stage.
Muffins!

And since everyone seems to be posting pics of their cats:

Sat Evening Foodum Dare
As others seem to enjoy doing this I thought I would post my nom noms for this evening:

Just ate this.
