    The evolution games / unnatural selection - Andrew - 48 Hour Compo Entry

    There is no evolution, only the games, Darwin was wrong and aliens were right. You're not sure why you're there but you have to fight or get extinctioned. Everybody else there as well. Which is a problem.

    Survival of the fittest indeed.

    WASD to move, space to jump, click to shoot, scroll to change weapons.

    WARNING: Contains raptors, sharks, turtles and kittens.

    I'll upload a non web version (just in case) soon.

    The kongregate version has some small ai tweaks and the kongregate api, so you can compare catkill numbers, scores and all that good stuff. Additionally enemies get added as time goes on in case you run out of things to kill. It's essentially a post compo version, or a jam version whichever you prefer to call it.

    Nice style. The game itself got boring fast though. I really liked the grenades (and the hand throwing it), nicely made.

    @josefnpat sorry :( I know that feel, this is the first LD I code on windows. I'll upload the standalone, maybe it works under wine.

    That's pretty tough. I like the soundtrack. 1000 kittens were killing me every time after falling down the tower.

    Wow, what a hard game - found it kind of random whether I managed to kill a kitten or not when I shot it, and more accurate at long distances for some reason. Understandable decision to go with billboards for the monsters, that's something I'll have to consider for my next LD instead of making them out of primitives as making one 3D model takes me closer to 48 days than 48 hours ;) Oh to be an artist.

    I wasn't sure what to do, besides killing kittens, that is. 10 mins is quite a long time and it's extremely difficult to survive that long. Music got a little boring after a while, but it also kinda fits. The game could use some gameplay reworking. Other than that, graphics are actually quite good. Nice entry!

    Very strange game. I'm not a big FPS fan sorry. But I like your idea to make the gun pointer as a light.

    Finished the game with 855, really like the mood and those cats are pretty terrifying even more than the sharks. How did you do the flash light effect?

    @marudziik it's not so hard once you figure out the trick to it. The various creatures aren't that smart

    The shotgun kittens and torpedo sharks were interesting, but I rarely got to see the side of these monsters. Some random movement would have improved this game significantly. The monsters would not get stuck for ever, and we would get to see the monster from more angles. Also if you don't want to spend too much time lighting a scene, the directional light is your fiend.

    @hamster_mk_4 the sharks especially are not meant to be fought head on and you can generally circle around them, one thing you can do for kittens is jump over them as they charge at you, then see them circle around. Not entirely advisable though.
