The Origin of Faeces - pentaphobe - 48 Hour Compo Entry
Windows | OS/X | Web (post-compo update) | Web | Source
You are an Ape who, upon reading of the Pope's insistence that evolution is "Just a Theory," decides to do something about it.
Unfortunately there are vast parts of this that are unfinished. Some things I'd like to add for the Jam:
* fix the Hazards system. it was fun
* fix the (extremely broken) tree swinging
* add the projectile weapon mentioned in the title.
But it's 5 minutes until the end of submission hour and my (3g) internet only just started 'working' again :|

I'll chuck the source up on github soon - just going to go through and clean out some of the bug-testing cruft and post the link separately.
== Updates ==
28 of August
- added an updated/bugfix version with quite a few little tweaks
- this is just mostly stuff that irked me, but I'm kind of inspired to spend 24hrs on it just to add the stuff that almost made it in (mostly hazards, the boss and the intro "movie" as I life got in the way of participating in the jam)
- there's a change log on github here: https://github.com/pentaphobe/Origin-of-Faeces/blob/Source-Only/CHANGELOG.md
27/28 of August
- Added a Mac build (still no windows projector). This is still the exact same version as the compo and should be used for rating rather than any future bugfixes.
- Added link to the github repo. Comments are thin on the ground at the moment, but I'll update over the next couple of days (in between playing all these sweet games!)

Haha, funny platformer, man. Although, not sure if it was meant to be, but the ape ran REALLY fast on my computer. Graphics were nice, although maybe few different kinds of trees would've kept the landscape more interesting. Good job.
I ran about 6000 and something metres and ate a shitload of disturbing bodyless brains. Why? No idea. Oddly fun
6666m , I'm a gorilla semigod, i can even fly, double jumping and attract all the brains around at once XD
490 meters!
Nice graphics. Liked trying to throw myself really far with the hookshot.
Obviously it's incomplete, but you know that :)
The ape would benefit from being slower at the beginning, making the increase in speed more obvious and wanted.
The game is fast but quite boring. I've liked the idea of the monkey's ability to swing on the trees and the animation of the leaves falling down. The game lacks any changes in the appeareance of the monkey-guy, for an example after eating 50 brains he should evolve two legs, and at the end of the game he should've drive a "jumping" car. The Audio is fitted to the gameplay but it is not a compliment. The game had a bigpotential and probably if the author would have a bit more time the game could in the top ten.
my eyes hurt from speeding through after getting the brain magnet high enough to be able to run through. thats fine though. i like your little comments in game. would be nice to see it finished!
I like the core mechanic. What you should do is lose the run button (let the ape do the running) and release it on iOS.
This is awesome. I actually was able to kill my self with some swinging offscreen glitch. The brains are creepy but I like the concept otherwise.
Holy crap, comments!
Thanks for the feedback, everyone :)
Baburo: hehe, it's supposed to be quite fast, but perhaps there's a timestep issue - I'm _very_ new to flashpunk. Glad you liked it!
magicdweedoo: I'm still chuckling at your comment, ape person :)
Blundis: thanks! I spent a while tweaking the speedup, but it still didn't feel right - I expect that as I playtested it my expectations of what was "slow" changed.. the post-compo update has a different speedup value, but I think it's too slow now - any thoughts?
zx81: I like your candor. The design included further evolution than I managed to do in time, hadn't considered moving to a car, but going upright, shaving itself and putting on a suit were all originally intended :)
Sergey Mohov: Psychic Man! Originally this was an auto-runner, but I turned that off while testing and grew to like it this way (easier to play around on the trees) however I will probably still make it more canabalt like, perhaps with the LEFT key slowing movement to a walk. I'll let you know if I ever sell my soul to the apple store.
nseward: re. "awesome": yay! re. "offscreen glitch": nay! Originally the game killed you offscreen because of the aforementioned canabalt design - I then spent the last few hours trying to fix this "feature" thought I'd nailed it but a few people seem to have found ways to usurp my fixes.
Thanks again everyone for playing
"Frankly, I'm amazed you stuck with it this long." Great graphics and feel, not much substance though.
silly in a good way. Great mood and humour, and even the eating sound effect!
The actual mechanics can be improved, and challenge added. But I liked it, and a finished, polished higher-res version of this would be really fun.
Run 4000 meters :) Still didn't found a clever way to use the grappling hook (apart having fun)
ncannasse: Nice one :) Yeah, I kind of hacked together the grappling hook mechanic trying to avoid too much stall time, unfortunately it came out that way regardless. There are a few ways you can get quite effective with it, however since there's no scenario which /requires/ swinging it sort of becomes irrelevant (besides, as you say, "having fun"!)
Will Edwards: I shall venture to give this a crack - I'd aimed at low-res partially as a stylistic choice (and partly out of "oh god I only have 23 hours") but it didn't quite mesh ideally. Once I'm near non-3g internet I'll upload some of my video including the making-of-sound effects which is a bit goofy :)
Great -- would have been better with a little more risk & some goal, but still compelling enough to get through all that was there.
