Ludum Dare 24
August 24th-27th 2012 :: Theme: Evolution
Oneway - azurenimbus - Jam Entry
Post-jam (Kongregate) | Original (Web) | Source
NEWEST UPDATE : Released new post-jam version, I think it's pretty cool. :D A bunch of new mechanics, 44 levels in total, some other snazzy stuff. Please try it and let me know what you think either here or via twitter: @azurenimbus
UPDATE 1: Noticed a small bug that wouldn't allow the game to stop after STAGE 1. I fixed it, but nothing else about the content.
To play: click to start game, then use the up and down arrows to select an organism.
You have to make it to the end without letting it die!
-----
I can't believe I got this in, barely in time, I nearly had a heart attack!
Unfortunately I only got the mechanics fully working about 10 minutes before the deadline, so I only had that time for level design! I haven't even had a chance to try it out yet :D
I will work on the levels and then upload a post-compo version.
Used Stencyl, Adobe Illustrator and GarageBand (no loops this time).
Let me know what you think, and if you played just the original, please come back to try the next version!
Thanks!

Sorry, there was a little bug that made it impossible to play before, now it's fixed!
Very nice! It took me a couple tries to realize that I was supposed to NOT choose the organism shown on the barrier. Once I figured that out, it was great. :)
Kinda short, but liked it overall. I managed to finish it, but it was getting hard, I also had some luck. Good entry.
I like concept, although it looks like "selection" more than "evolution". Love the arts.
Nice entry, with a not so common mechanic
Graphics and audio both works very well with the game :)
Despite a nice progression in difficulty and the fact that you wait to introduce the player to blue barriers, I feel that you should take the player by the hand and guide him a little more : It took me ~5/6 tries to complete a level with no luck involved.
Letting the player discover the mechanics by himself may profit to some game, but not to this one.
Anyway, you did a good job. With a little more content and polish it could easily turn into a "bookmarked for lunch break" game :)
Game is working now :)
I liked it. It's very simple but fun. With more levels, it could turn into a cool and frantic "think-fast/act-fast" game... with the blue barries, you have to understand the pictures quickly and then think the correct strategy for them.
The asthetics are also very pleasing... both sound and graphics fit well the game, even being very simple.
Nice, very clever, fits the theme really well I think. Overall pretty enjoyable :)
Great concept, found it a bit frustrating just because I found it difficulty to identify which I was controlling. Maybe have colour around the one you're controlling? Really liked the sound and you've added nice visual design to it and like I said it's an innovative concept.
Very unique take I guess. A little frustating after not knowing what to do the first time. Still a little fun. Nice work!
Love the feeling of this one. The simplicity of the drum beat and the elegant keyboard when you made it through.
Would have liked the selection change to feel more defined though so I knew I'd made a selection.
Ah, I didn't get what I was doing at first, but then I did. Good job!
The sound and art are great, although i was a little confused at first.
Very simple and elegant style to the game, I like that. The music nicely highlights the gameplay and the game's mechanic is rather neat :3
Cool little game, I like that it works with as little explanation as possible. On the later levels I felt like I could've done with the flashing being quicker since you don't have long to respond to passing through the pillars and so you really need it to be immediately obvious which circle is selected.
Got to the end! Took a minute to figure out what I was trying to do... felt like that was part of the challenge...
Very well done! The graphics were simple but nice looking, and the game got a bit harder near the end, where I died quite a few times before I got it. It's original and fun!
An idea: an endless mode that procedurally generates the next item to remove or add. Would be neat ;)
Very innovative gameplay, as usual. Not as good as the previous game you made for Ludum Dare according to me, but still a pretty solid entry! With a bit more content, maybe procedurally generated or something, it would become REALLY addictive.
ah what a tricky little critter! your games are always interesting--i especially like the sound in this one
Kinda confused by this, but I love the graphical style you've employed here, very clean. Perhaps a better way of showing which one you've selected?
was a little bit confused at first, didn't realize what was happening until near the end. made perfect sense on the 2nd play through though.
I like the idea but you should make it to be easy to understand which ball is currently selected. That made it confusing to play. Other than that nice art and music. I like it. Now I'll try the post-compo version and see the improvements :D
Interesting idea, and it looks very sleek and clean. My only complain is that you didn't explain the mechanics at all and it took me a annoying while to figure out that I need to have different symbol than what it shows. Nice job with the game though, I found it pretty challenging on the last levels with lots of changing symbols.
I liked this game. Nice audio, really polished feeling, and fairly unique. Got it finished. I liked the visuals too.
Cool game. Loved the concept and gameplay. It's quite fun.
Neat concept! I like the visual pattern matching. Just a little more feedback on whether you succeeded or failed would've helped a lot.
Took a while to figure out, as it wasn't clear which was selected at first (especially since pressing up or down cycles back around) and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to match the organism on the barrier or do the opposite. However, overall liked the idea here - I think there's a lot of potential to turn this into a more complex game.
It is a bit to short and not intuitive. Besides that, it is a good concept.
Very cool. I like the style, and the sounds are great. It took me a bit to figure out what I was supposed to be doing, but in any case it was really enjoyable. I could see taking a bit more of a music edge to this working well - ie. make the sounds a bit more integrated with the movement. Anyway, good work!
Interesting game; crisp art. Not a lot of time to process and decide when you get to later levels, but fun, and a clever use of the theme.
Very interesting concept, I like it! At first I didn't know what was going on though. It took me a couple of tries to figure out the game mechanics. Graphics and sounds are simple but very polished. It did left me wanting for more. Nice job!
I'll give you points for staying true to the theme, but the actual experience felt like a poorly explained quick time event.
This reminds me of IQ tests and I'm not too happy it took me so many attempts to finish the game - actually a nice mechanic. I will play post-compo version when you're done. I liked the strong, yet minimalistic graphics.
Did take me some time to get it..
Very simple game, nice sounds, but nothing I'm motivated to keep playing it.
it took some time to understand the logic, but then I understood. . . and realised I'm really no good a quick action games.
But it looks good and is original (although I don't see the theme in it).
An interesting outing indeed! I rather like the core concept :)
I like this concept. It was a bit hard for me to latch onto in the first few levels but when I got it, I really had fun with it! I would say adjust the music and sound volume a little bit so that it balances out. Good game!
God, the post-compo version is insanely hard. I really liked how the mechanisms are introduced. Well done!
The graphics are clean and nicely done.
The repetitive sound effects become annoying after a while, I think it could be improved by having some varying rhythm instead of all the notes being short and evenly timed. In its current form, I'd say the game would be better off without the extremely short loop in the background.
Gameplay-wise, the initial impulse I had was to try to match the shape displayed, but it's the other way around (I see you changed it in the post-jam version, good call).
The game ends before providing any real challenge but as you mentioned, that's out of lack of time more than anything else. The post-jam version makes it clear you had more in mind.
The one thing the post-jam version did wrong compared to the jam one is the ability to change your mind after selecting an element. When I realize I made a mistake, the post-jam version forces me to wait instead of allowing me to quickly update my selection by clicking again.

I tried to play it, but it didn't make any sense. Two symbols move to the right, doesn't matter which one I choose, the one at the top explodes.
If I pick the top one, the game frezzes
If I pick the bottom one, it keeps going, then the screen turns white... and nothing happens.
