Tiny Maze Speedrun - netmute - 48 Hour Compo Entry
Web | Source | Dev Diary/Post Mortem | 'After compo' version (Don't rate this)
This is my first finished game! And my first Javascript project. And the first time I made my own graphics... oh well :)
The mazes are randomly generated each time. I implemented a recursive backtracking algorithm for this. Which took the most time since I'm not that familiar with Javascript.
I love my game! ;) I'm more than happy with what I've accomplished in 2 days.
Run with cursor keys or WASD. Press and hold multiple keys at the same time for smooth maze running.
Tested/working in Chrome and Firefox. Crashes Safari. Doesn't even load in IE.

Yeah, the controls take a bit getting used to. Sorry for that :(
You can press and hold multiple keys together, which makes little guy run around corners
I have really appreciate this game, it's a simple maze game but.. It's full of fun \o/
It's just a maze, but what gameplay there is feels nice and smooth. I don't know why you made the goal of the game finding a toilet, but the guy has a nice little animation to him.
Interesting mechanic... I could play the Easy level, and it was good, but Normal and Hard levels don't load... How does it relate to the theme?
Medium and hard levels not loading could be your browser choking on the recursion. Definitely works on Chrome or Firefox :/
Good training for when I find myself in a mansion and need to locate the bathroom. Good job with the javaScript.
Nice one, but there are not many possible paths in the labyrinth (from start to end there are not many times when you can choose a direction, and the wrong one is sometimes obvious)
it's ok, extra point for pee joke, but i found the controls were harsh
Congratulation for your first game... better luck in next LD, hopefully with something better then just simple maze :)
I appreciate the tight controls. If it were a #2 run, those winding halls would have double meaning!
Reminds me a lot of this previous LD entry! http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=preview&uid=4902
Don't take that the wrong way, I loved that one. And this one, too. I do enjoy a good maze game. Your mazes are harder to solve, too. Unfortunately, I must mark you down on theme, as it's a stretch at best.
@thristhart You're right! This looks very much like my game :) I even had the same colored boxes for player and exit during development. (Haven't seen that game until you linked it. There must be some strange subconscious urge to use a blue box as player sprite in maze games.)
Interesting that players have the same problems with moving around corners.
I can verify that this runs in Opera as well. It's a pretty fun game; I might suggest that the timer not start running until the player actually moves, though, since it can be a bit hard to pick out the player sprite at the beginning of the game.
Works in Opera. (No sound?)
Great for a first-time JavaScript experience!
Nice, simple, straight to the point. Still could have used some graphics.
timers are the best. it's a maze. with a timer. and boom, it's the best. Goes to show how something really simple can some times be the most fun. Good job! I actually had no problem with the controls and thought they were fine
I liked the whole "you have to pee" and stuff, but the game felt a bit too simple. It's pretty impressive that the mazes are randomly generated though! Must have been pretty difficult and I commend you for your efforts!
However from the point of view of a simple player, I think it could have used some "oomph" to make it not simply a maze game.
@4urentertainment Yeah, the initial idea was that there are different powerups and little obstacles all over the maze, but I ran out of time. Maybe I'll still do that in a 'after compo' version.
Good job on the randomly generated mazes, and the back-story is pretty hilarious :D
Not a bad maze generator. The controls were a bit too sensitive. There were a lot of cases where I would overshoot an opening over and over.
This is a really cool simple game. 33 on easy - can't be too bad (probably is).

Simple yet effective! Not much more to say than that really. Loved the humor at the start, movement felt just right. Congratulations for a complete and polished game :)

Also I forgot to mention, you commented on our game page saying you couldn't play it as you were on a mac. Previously our link was listed as 'Windows' but we have changed that now. The game is untested on mac but has run on other OS than windows so give it a try and see how it goes!
The "story" made me Lol! That counts for something! (Nice work on the game)
Heh!! Nice to know that in a Hard world, I would never reach the toilet. I love these kinds of generative things. Nice simple graphics -- when he was moving, I really got a feeling of urgency.
Good job on your first game, keep it up!!
Nice take on the theme! One of the most original entries. I laughed when I saw who you were and what you had to do.
Hi everyone,
thanks for the many nice comments!
I made an 'advanced' version of the game, with most of the stuff I initially planned to include: powerups, sounds, a few more graphics.
You can find it here:

Funny ! The idea of the guy who has to pee is good. The improved version is better. Good postmortem as well :)
Randomly generated maze? Nice! I finished easy version in 60 seconds, medium in 130 seconds (I was lucky) and hard... ...well ... I was not brave enough to finish it ;) I like it. I read majority of comments here. So, good luck in next LD48.
Holy crap. I'm surprised my guy still has a bladder. 214.43 on Medium.
53 seconds on medium, so no peeing on the floor.
I like that the movement is fast and sensitive. I felt like it was pretty intuitive to use multiple keys to get around corners. Good job on the maze and overall.
Great game! Pretty addictive as well, once I started the large maze, I HAD to finish it :-) Took me 487 seconds...
It's a maze game. Pee joke is a plus, but it's not the type of game I want to play all the time. That being said, it's not a bad entry. Pity there's no audio, but it's a very good project for a first-timer in JS. Nice job!
Kudos for the javascript, yay! :-)
It's quite hard to control but it's a fun idea.
How did you do that? A straight up maze runner that is fun!? Good job.
Solid maze game. You can really feel the pressure with the timer going on and the guy's animation, so I'm giving you points for mood even when your have no music here. Even the game palette (if W&B counts as palette) is "toilet-sy".
The link with the theme is rather vague but it's an amazingly fun entry despite this. I also still can't believe you made a fully-functional maze generator for this game. Congratulations dude.
Pretty cool! In comparing with the classic pen and paper version, it would be nice if there was a way to track where you've gone, something like a yarn or pieces of bread you leave behind. Also, when you're doing this with a pen it can be much faster, because there are no walls you bump into when pressing a certain key. So if you could figure out a way to make the character never stop when you're pressing a certain key, this could be a million dollar idea! Well, maybe not a million dollars, but it'd be awesome :)

Was quite hard to steer into side passages because the collision detection is quite harsh and even the smallest key tap made me move 2 or 3 pixels.
