    Tiny Defender - KunoNoOni - 48 Hour Compo Entry

    So here it is, my LD23 Compo entry. Man am I glad this is over! LOL! I learned so much making this game. I hope you all enjoy it.

    The premise is this. Viruses have infected humans and being the adventurous scientist you are, you devised a way to eradicate them. You built a special submarine, which when shrunken to microscopic size, will be injected into the infected human. You'll maneuver your sub through the blood stream, and fire your specialized laser, which you also created, kill all viruses you come into contact with. You'll need to fly through the whole body to make sure you get them all.

    Easy Mode - Red Blood Cells will not hurt you. Those are the bright red diamond-looking things.

    Hard Mode - Red Blood Cells WILL hurt you.

    Note:I'm no beethoven, so don't expect good music lol. It worked in a pinch though. Recommend muting music. You have been warned *giggle*

    Note 2: It has come to my attention that there are 2 bugs in my game. The first one is when you die and restart the game your instantly killed. The second one deals with starting the game in hard mode and instantly dying. I have fixed these in my offline version but can't upload it to be judged. So I will tell you work arounds for them.

    The first one is easy, if you get to the game over screen that tells you that you lost, just close the browser and open it again.

    For the second one, when you choose 2 for hard mode make sure you press x before any of the bright red blood cells are down near the bottom of the screen.

    I really can't believe I missed those in my play testing.

    Note 3: Uploaded a bugfix version.

    Powerups or different movement patterns would have added a little variety to the stages, but the boss fights were a nice addition.

    If I'm supposed to kill all of the viruses, they come way too quickly. It has the making of a cool little shooter, needs some balancing. Wish the player moved faster and auto-fired.

    It's a funny clone of invaders. When you die and try to play again, die automatically just at the beggining, think that is a possible bug. Good work! :)

    Easy mode was easy, because I didn't really have to move (since I didn't have to avoid the red blood cells). Hard mode would be really, really hard.

    I think I got to Right Foot before my hand got tired from tap tap tap tap.

    Piterlouis: Yeah I just noticed that bug and I found the problem. I never reset the lives back to 3. Can't believe I missed that in all my testing.

    If improved, this can become a great game. ^^
    Adding something like score, power-ups, etc would be nice. =]

    And I must say that the hard mode is really hard! I mean, come on! I must dodge all that cells... With a huge hitbox? That's insane!

    Nice job with the game. Besides the restart bug that was mentioned I just wish I could hold space down to shoot. Always nice to see a fellow germ game in this compo!

    I don't know, this shooting-up games are greatly known to anybody here, and I'm bored out of these. And nothing is changing during levels. It's just to static.

    you have the basis for a nice little shooter here, so i hope you work on it post-compo! for now, my wrist hurts from hammering space but yeah, variance, a bit of balance, autofire, and i imagine this will be a pretty good game!

    Its a fun little shooter. Having to key pressing space did get a little tiring (and noisey) but overall good job

    Nice shooter, but there are more levels than there is variety. Still, solid, responsive controls, which is more than I can say for some games.

    I liked that each level had the name of a different part of the body, although I think adding variety other than just changing the colour of the virus would've been nice.

    If you made further improvements, you could easily have the game show a 'map' of the body; where you are and where you're heading next, arcade game style. Add in some story between stages and you've got a pretty good game shaping up here!

    Really appreciate the feedback :) I do plan on sprucing up the game and perhaps putting it on Kongregate. But we'll see what the future holds.

    I really like the art style / theme balance. Agree with all the majority of the other points here, but it's still a lot of fun as it stands.

    Nice overall.
    A few thoughts-
    - I liked the graphics. Retro, but cool.
    - It would have been nice for the bosses to do something (if they did, then I didn't see it).
    - levels could have been shorter, but with more varie bad guys, or ones that took more than a shot to kill.

    Great game though, the particle explosions were great too.

    i gave up after the second bossfight. did i die? nope, it was just too repetitive and the music gave me a headache
    at least there were the bossfights...when i started the fifth round of killing dark blue diamonds, i actually yelled 'YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!' because it was all the same

    Not bad! I agree with the others that it could use a bit more variety, though.

    You might also want to differentiate the virus cells from the others with something more than just a green colour. (not that I can complain too much--the colour contrast of the background in my project is just terrible)

    I'd really like to just be able to hold down the space bar and fire! And the enemies should have different movement patterns too, so that just standing in the same place the whole time isn't a viable strategy. But this is a nice start! Keep working at it.

    I agree that this could be a pretty fun little game with more powerups and variety. Great start. Plus it makes me want to watch the movie Innerspace.

    I enjoyed playing this, and I jumped straight to hard mode xD The controls felt to me for some reason a bit sticky, and I feel they could have been a bit smoother, but other than that its a really great little game :)

    I will don't say anything new, the easy mode is very easy and boring, but the hard mode is very hard! But i like the game anyway :)

    I've never pressed x to be injected before, does it hurt?

    The very first thing I noticed is that there's something wrong with the collision detection at the start of the game. My ship explodes for no reason, which is very annoying. The workaround you provide doesn't seem to make any difference.

    The second thing I noticed was that the lives counter doesn't get reset at the end of a game, which means I have to refresh the page to play again, which is also very annoying.

    The third thing I noticed was that the collision detection is worse than I thought. My ship also explodes for no reason while playing, which is utterly infuriating. I think this happens because you're using bounding box collision in such a way that big chunks of the bounding boxes are outside the colliding objects. You should greatly reduce the size of the bounding boxes in order to give the player the benefit of the doubt, or use pixel-perfect collision detection instead (it's quite easy to do this in Flash but Flixel doesn't help with this as far as I recall).

    The easy mode doesn't suffer these awful collision problems but it is also far too easy and therefore boring. It's basically impossible to fail in the easy mode so long as you're conscious.

    The boss fights are particularly pointless in easy mode because the boss is even more harmless than the standard attack waves.

    If these things were fixed I think the game would be quite fun, if rather repetetive. As it is I just find it frustrating.

    The graphics could do with a bit more variation, particularly in the background, but they are inoffensive and do the job nicely.

    I liked the music and I thought it fit very well. The sound-effects are also chosen well.

    I liked the particle effects particularly when the player's ship explodes.

    The bounding-box collision in the bugfixed version is still really annoying but otherwise it's much better. The hard mode is now fun, the easy mode still isn't.

    It's a shame that there's no scoring system.

    You also seem to have slowed down the maximum rate of fire in the bugfixed version, which I don't think is a good move.

    A good take on Galaga. It is fun and simple, with very competent work regarding gameplay, graphics and sound. The only thing I would add would be some sort of feedback regarding progress inside a level! Good work and good entry!

    Although you warned that you were no Beethoven you're definitely competent enough to make a good fitting tune =D!
    One problem I've had with this game was the fact that it gets very monotonous after a while.
    PS- I love your particle explosions.

    I enjoyed the graphical style. Since it is impossible to kill all of the viruses, it feels more like "surviving" than "defending". I think there should be fewer and there should be a penalty for letting them get past you. Also, the level change and lost life screens are so similar and pass so quickly I wasn't always sure which one I accomplished.

    Nice game. As others have said, it gets a little repetitive, since the viruses only move straight down and don't shoot back. Could be really fun though with some slight improvements.
