    BatterSwat - alexandervrs - Jam Entry

    Oh no! Kohikuma the mountain bear has been stung by a lovestruck queen bee and injected with a strange poison that shrunk him down to nearly the size of an ant! Think you can help him find the queen bee back and reverse the effect? ...and get your revenge on the bees for messing with you while you're at it?

    Controls:

    Arrow keys - Move
    X Key - Claw / Decide
    Esc - Quit Game
    F11 Key - Toggle Fullscreen mode

    * This game is also joystick compatible: (and I recommend it!)

    Dpad - Move
    Button 1 - Claw / Decide

    This project was done solo, I moved it to Jam because I needed more time to do what i had in mind, plus had some issues with my tools and also was not sure if my arrangement of the "Flight of the Bumblebee" theme was allowed in solo. I am pretty pleased with it, there are some things that could be added or improved but time was running out. I already used a lot of my time for the graphics alone.

    ! Please extract all the files and folders from the zip archive before playing
    otherwise sounds may not play & custom options might not load from the ini file!

    There's also different difficulty modes defined in the settings.ini file, but they are untested, they should work fine. Basically they give you more/less lives and change the power of your attacks to make the game more challenging or easy as pie.

    Although the game itself isn't very entertaining, I enjoyed listening to audio.

    Hehe thanks. Make sure you play a 2-3 stages though, I keep introducing new things through each level and go easy on the first levels that the gameplay might look plain at first sight. ;)

    It was a bit boring and I felt unstoppable going through the levels but I loved the way it looked and it was interesting. Good entry

    Thanks for the input, glad you liked it. :)
    Yeah, it was supposed to have a combo system thingy, but didn't quite work as intended, could fix with some adjustments but I barely had anytime for proper testing. :( I also noticed the caterpillars have a bug where they don't do enough damage, I can't change it during the judging, well the bomb pods make up for it though.

    I noticed I have uploaded the wrong exe, so I fixed it. Nothing was really changed apart from a leak in the health variable I noticed last minute that could cause instability and health resetting through levels. I mixed up the .exes at upload time, Doh excitement!

    Gets boring quickly, mushrooms take wayyyy to long to destroy, as with most enemies. I found that if I remained above the bees, they would pass through me occasionally and I could hit them but they couldn't hit me. Excellent visual design, loved all of the effects.

    Instead, I found the easy difficulty relaxing - I won't be playing this game again, (because there are so many of them!), so it was nice not to have to deal with such a brutal difficulty level to goad me into faux obligation. I slipped down to as low as about 2 lives near the end with the triple-beehives and the MonsterBee, so total brain dead playing would have killed me. But I was able to beat the game on the third try after a couple sacrificial runs just seeing what can be touched or not.

    Was someone talking about Combo Systems? Not necessary. Instead because multi creatures take damage with a bear slap, the way I beat the bee hives was to break them open and then power-slap 4 bees at a time. Then when they fly back to regroup run, and they trick themselves into flying single formation.

    I played 3 stages and got bored. Too repetitive and simple! But I liked the presentation, graphics and sound!

    @TaoPhoenix
    Yes, the combo system and the AI was not working as I'd want it to. Actually I realized I let the multiple enemies hit code in after I submitted, oh well...

    @Woodpecker, @murilo & @Pierrec
    Thanks, and yeah I agree that after some time it does get boring. Was planning to add other moves, enemies & powerups but you know how it goes, when time is running out, you're just glad you have something done. :)

    @JellyFame
    Sorry there, I didn't have enough time to convert it in HTML5 as the software I was trying to use "GameMaker HTML5" had showstopper bugs and I relied too much on Windows extensions especially for audio which complicated things.

    I could've sworn that was a pokemon. The game was ok, but I was really impressed with the cutscene, music, and art. Also, I wish the collision check for picking up things was taller, it seems small.

    Nice graphics, good effort. Gameplay was very simplistic - it improved later on as you added more elements but that ramp-up should have happened a lot faster I feel.

    Really good game, it seems very complete. It just goes on too long with the same repetitive gameplay. The graphics and animation are wonderful.

    Really crisp and smoooooooth visuals! The gameplay gets repetitive quickly, but your aesthetics are certainly appealing!

    I suspect a bit of tweaking would do this game a lot of good. In future attempts i suggest you spend a bit more time play testing (It often helps to throw test builds out into the LD IRC channel for others to play around with and get feedback on)

    Bonus points for itty bitty bears.

    Rah, beaten by the queen-bee! Cute graphics, a nice progression curve, but the gameplay is sometimes a bit awkward (the hit boxes especially). Quite a nice game overall.

    Really cute graphics. You should introduce more tricky gameplay concepts towards the beginning, so that people are instantly interested :)
