No I was going to implement the 45 degree angle but I realized without it it made a nice difficulty level for a relaxed but slightly challenging game. And no it was meant to have a relaxed feel.
Thank you so much for your feedback it means so much to me as this is my first competition and first game I've let out for download. Thank you very much.
I quite enjoyed the shooting - maybe partly because my game was a bit of a shooter :) It did seem a bit easy, though - my game was over from running into enemies long before I ran out of earths to save.
Also I noticed that the game doesn't seem to be processing all window messages - switching away and back to the window during the mission screen makes it appear to freeze up. I finished with the following log messages:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "Main.py", line 257, in <module>
File "Main.py", line 171, in update
File "Main.py", line 88, in update
pygame.error: display Surface quit

Pretty fun for what it is!
It crashed once for me at the intro text, but there wasn't any log or anything that I saw I could give you.
Aside from that, is there any reason that only three point-circle-sphere-wreckage things are allowed to be in the game at once? I went to go pew a spaceyship and suddenly the point I was going for despawned :(
Love the graphics, especially the earth sprite. The story could totally be from a Doctor Who episode! (thats a compliment I guess) 5/5
Thanks for all the comments guys. I know I know it has a few bugs like if you touch the keyboard or click during the intro it gets all sensitive. That's not how I raised my baby he should have been more thick skinned to clicking and typing. It was just a minor logic error. Also when exiting it gives the error message that schnerble described, that was another minor logic error. The game however should be running fine. And the reason there were only 3 coin things on the screen was because each ship drops one coin and randomly respawns to a different angle leaving the coin behind. If you kill the same instance of that ship it will reset the coin parented to it.
Otherwise thank you guys so much for all the comments it means a lot to have positive feedback from such an awesome community like LD.

Neat :)
Allowing only the four main directions for the player is mean, since the others come in in 8 angles. I also tried to not touch the planet during the first half, which I later noticed you don't have to.
Is there any speedup later on? It feels a bit too easy in the long run.
The music and sound effects are very nice ;)
