Petri - Tomalla - 48 Hour Compo Entry
"Petri" - the scientific misadventures of a small blob. Or maybe not?
Instructions:
* Left mouse button - move your character
* R - restart a current map
You'll get hang of it pretty quickly.
This game is Windows only. It's best played in fullscreen. All of the sounds have been recorded by me. Music tracks have been created on my keyboard Yamaha PSR-1500 ( my best pal. Say hi! ).
The game is written in C++ and uses HGE engine. Type it in Google and you'll find it immediately. Unfortunately I didn't think of creating my own framework before a compo. That resulted in a rather hectic creation process - that's why my source code is so messy. Sorry for that!
It's also worth mentioning that it's my first LD entry ever. And it's my first game I've ever finished as well. Turns out you have to have a deadline for a game to get completed. The point is, don't be too harsh on me when commenting - that's all I suppose.
I wonder what did I forget to mention? Anyways, have fun. Cheers!

It's a fun game, a bit short though, I'd have kept me playing for more levels no problem.
Good game concept and good execution too! Really enjoyed the game and music.
It's a very fun game, I love the fact you have a little momentum, it provides some challenge. The gameplay is neat too!
Nice audio, solid graphics. A bit too short and simple, but funny. Good decision to instantly restart by pressing "R" - something other would be annoying. On a map you let some green things ran into red things (which walk in a rectangle)... sometimes all green blobs get killed, but often one survives and kills you. The level should not based on random in this scale :)
for as simple as this is, everything flowed together really well. i especially liked the music. this is really solid for your first LD; you kept the scope small and polished it up. great job!
Really good first LD entry. Fun to play and nice audio. Good work sir.
Thanks for the positive feedback, guys! It means a lot to me. And you're all right - many of my friends also complained about the game being too short. I wish it was longer myself, but I spent too much time on thinking ahead, how would the framework look like and what I want it to consist of. Too less time on a story and levels themselves and in my opinion - the plot and the mood are the core components of a game. I should have thought of a framework before a compo, but hey - that's what the first entry is for, right?
I'm going to rework this game after the compo finishes, the way *I see it*. I'll then post the game and a new framework itself and use it in a future compo. It's very likely for me to post some thoughts of it on my 'journal' as well.
@Jeremias, it was intentional. It's not random, you just have to move downwards, for the chasing blobs to rush into more upcoming red ones. But with 'Restart' feature it shouldn't pose much of a problem anyways I suppose.
Cheers!
awesome game! very fun to play with, the text parts were nice too. fullscreen was a really good idea for this one. wish it was longer :)
Nice game, initially I didn't realise how to restart the level, but that is my fault for not reading stuff properly. Once I did it was great fun, shame there isn't more :D
Glad to see some interaction with enemies, typically these games just involve dodging everything blindly.
That was pretty nice. It had this professional feel to it, like it wasn't from a game jam, but a full game.
Hehe, I love the end, blobby fate. It was a fun game and the mouse control was interesting with the easing on mouse click being different. Nice and fun little levels, though the lack of specified controls almost had me restarting the game to restart a level after death, then I saw you listed the controls in the text. Very cool!
Nicely done sir - enjoyed that. You had the same game idea I did :)
Nice concept, liked the level designs and game play mechanics.
Well done.
Really enjoyable! Loved the controls and how much of a story you managed to cram in there. Nice!
Short, quirky, fun - exactly like I expect LD games to be! Nice music.
This one has a nice style and all, but when I died I had to close the game and restart? Really? Meh. :-|
@ratking you silly, 'R' restarts the level. :) If you read 'Help' menu in-game or instructions at the top of the description of this entry, you would know it.
Very good game. A bit short though. I liked the music. Controls were a bit odd, but they worked well once you got used to them. Seems odd only having a keyboard shortcut for restart in a completely mouse controlled game though.
Also a way to skip the intro would have been useful.
Skipping an intro is a neat idea which I didn't really think of back then. I'm planing on adding a few other features as well like pausing a game. I don't see anything wrong in having a keyboard shortcut though, however an automatic restart after a player's death might be handy. Added to my TODO list! Thanks for feedback.
Nice graphics, nice mood, and a storyline with a twist. Well done.
This is a great game. Too bad it is so short. I think that the underlying game play idea lends itself to a whole bunch of additional interesting levels that might be worth exploring. The game feel rather polished as well. Congrats!
Loved it - really sad it had to end so quickly. Felt so polished. I think its simply a case of needed more time, but thats what ludum dare is about eh?
Super well done! I really appreciate games that don't give you a wall of text to read in order to learn how to play. Just introduce the rules of the world gradually. You did exactly that!
I really enjoyed the music/intro. Game was fun and had a nice variety of challenges. Could be interesting om a touch device!
Awesome little game!
Unlucky poor blob.
Restart should also be possible with the mouse, maybe the right button?
Cool. Quite enjoyed it :) It was a little short, but good work for 48 hours. The music was good too.
Shame it was so short because I was enjoying that! The difficulty ramps up nicely and I actually liked having to figure out how to beat a level for myself rather than having an overly elaborate tutorial for each mechanic. Only thing I'd prefer would be optional keyboard controls (took a while to get used to the speed being equal to the distance the mouse was away when clicked).
