    Let's Bounce! - KevinWorkman - Warmup Entry

Bounce your ball higher than the other balls (they WILL try to interfere with you) to reach the goal height to win. This is Ludum Dare's 10th anniversary, so can you get through all ten levels?

This is my entry for warmup weekend. I wanted to make a simple game with the basics- animation, rudimentary physics and collision detection, game transitions (title screen, game, win/lose screens), levels, sounds, etc. So this idea popped into my head: a little game where you control a bouncing ball, trying to beat other bouncy balls to a goal height.

That basic idea evolved, as all ideas do, into something a little more involved than I originally planned, so I ended up spending more time on this than I did on my last actual Ludum Dare Entry. But I'm pretty pleased with the results, so I can't complain.

Also, shameless self-promotion: this game is hosted on a project I've been throwing together, StaticVoidGames.com. The website is designed for Java and Processing developers with competitions like Ludum Dare in mind. Just upload a jar and a thumbnail, and you have a decent-looking website showcasing applet, webstart, and jar versions of your game without wasting any precious development time on web design. I'm working on adding tutorials and ad revenue sharing, but for now, it's an easy way to deploy your Ludum Dare games!

pretty cool game. Bit frustrating though, trying to get the ball higher up.

Thanks! I wanted to make sure it wasn't too easy, but without knowing the underlying mechanics, maybe I made it too hard.

So the best strategy to get the ball higher is to always be pressing down when you're going down and up when you're going up- switching too early or too late will slow you down and cause you to bounce lower. Hitting the sides will also slow you down.

An easy way to get a big boost is to get above the enemy balls as they are bouncing up, then use their momentum to knock yourself higher. If you do that right, you can finish most of the levels in under a minute!

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to check it out.
