Ludum Dare 22
December 16th-19th 2011 :: Theme: Alone
Project Robert Sean - vrld - 48 Hour Compo Entry
Cross Platform/Source | Windows .exe | OS/X .app
You are stranded on a deserted island. You have no idea how you got there. Luckily, you have your three items you'd take on a deserted island with you.
Needs LOVE to run. I only tested the game with the latest development version (of which you can get the latest versions at [1],[2],[3] and [4]), but it should run just fine with LOVE 0.7.2, downloadable here: http://love2d.org/.
The game explains itself once running, but here are the controls for the start screen:
Up/Down, W/S - Cycle selection
Space, e - Select item if not on list, unselect otherwise
Return - Start, if three items selected

Great idea. However, I took my time carefully selecting the three items I wanted to take and then as soon as I was on the island I hit space a few times and had pretty much everything - so it felt as if my initial decision hadn't mattered at all. Then I explored and found nothing new, so I tried crafting with what I had and the game crashed. So I restarted and did it all again and then when I tried crafting it just always said "Result=???" regardless of what I tried to use. I had lots of items and tried lots of combinations, but I couldn't make anything!! Then I suddenly died of starvation without having seen any hit of food on the island or in my inventory. So I think this game needs better tutorials and more logical connections of crafting items so that someone new to the game can start playing easily. However, the mood of the game is good, I think the audio is above standard for a typical LD48 and the idea fits the theme really well. Nice work.
I couldn't get it to run. It displays the splash screen then crashes :-(
@FrankieSmilieShow: Well, you can move around, use things and make new things... Barely ;)
@cakemonitor: Yeah, the crafting and searching for stuff was added literally in the last hours, so I had no time for balancing. The scope of this project was just too big for me. Will do better next time. Also thanks for the kind words about sound effects. This was one thing I put a lot of effort into. :)
@caranha: What OS are you on? OSX?
Once past selecting the three items it crashes for me and says: "world.lua:220: Cannot create canvas: Not supported by your OpenGL implementation." Shame, it looked interesting to me.
It seems to be too unfinished to be playable, particularly the crafting elements. I gave this one four or five tries and they all ended in various crashes.
Couldn't run it on OS/X. This is the error I got:

I am running 32-bit version of OS X 10.6:

It seems like a really interesting idea, and fits the theme spectacularly. However, I found a lot of the same problems that some of the other commenters had. Crafting especially. I also found that when I got a bottle it didn't matter if it was full or empty, I still got restored the same.

I had the same problems, not really knowing what's going on is frustrating. Nice achievement overall, though. Also, time goes too fast IMHO.
PS: When I press ESC, it always crashes.
