Arrows to move, space to jump.
Try to find your friend in the levels.
The things which look like big fans make you float, boxes with a '!' in them are like mushrooms in Super Mario.
The last level is VERY hard.

I tested my game on Windows, indeed it doesn't work. I really don't know why, though.
At first it didn't work, just said 'press any key', and after closing wouldn't start at all, but after a while I tried a third time and then it work without a problem. (Windows 7 64)
Unfortunately same problem here as well.. Can't get past press any key :(
If you don't use Linux (it seems to work correctly on Linux), try to do what Lusmu said several times, it might work.

window never even pops up, i get a java window named "baloon" but only the title, the window itself never actually shows.
I used AyCe's fix and played through the game. Fixing the collision and adding some animation to those fans would certainly help. I didn't notice any use for the ! blocks.
