(No) Escape - Mahtiti - 48 Hour Competition Entry
Windows | Youtube vid | Soundtrack | Source
Hi, this is my first ever Ludum Dare entry, I didn't get as much time as I hoped to work on it but it was good fun. My game is a simple platformer made using XNA, so you'll need XNA 4.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23714) and .NET (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb203916.aspx).
Apologies if you have to install a bunch of stuff to run the game, if you're unable to play it I've uploaded a video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoRTSst3n3U so you can at least see it in action. Also sorry about my terrible programmer art, the game plays better than it looks!
Controls are:
A and D - move
SPACE - jump
Left mouse - shoot
Tools used:
Visual Studio for code
Photoshop for "graphics"
sfxr and Soundforge for audio
Famitracker for music

Super sweet! At first I thought the blocks would kill you, so I just started shooting straight up. Then I noticed the lava. Very nice.
I agree with VDO, was expecting blocks to either fall after shooting their support, or something, it does lose its appeal after you get on a good branch.
The best part about this game was without doubt the music, it went along fantastic with the game. Is there some way I can get the music?
I love the "hectic" feel in this. The shaky camera and the music are a big factor. Delightful how the music evolves as you climb.
The responsive controls make the eventual failure feel fair, and that's what makes this game addictive.
@Sanguine - The music is included in the source download, but it's split into separate tracks that are faded in as you climb. I've done a quick mixdown of all the tracks though, you can get it at http://www.mediafire.com/?ocg5ec1f9mpcxrt
Thanks everyone for the comments!
@Shot - Just got a Dropbox link setup, try these:

Rising lava plus falling blocks should make for a dangerous situation but it never really felt life threatening. The music was pretty good and tried to push it over the edge but the slower paced game play stopped it from getting there.
Damn, that got pretty frantic. The music really helps crank up the tension.
Well done, and nice music choice! The basic mechanic is cool and fits well with the theme. I did hope for it to get more frantic, though. It felt like a gradual encroachment by the lava got me in the end rather than anything especially threatening.
I liked the soundtrack, even tho it was simple, it fits the gameplay like a glove, really good game overall :-)
I love this implementation, one of the best "escape x approaching" games so far. The idea is not new, but the constant upwards struggle matches the theme well, because it actually feels like struggle. The mood is very good, and with a little polish and better graphics this would be a great game. Audio also helps a lot. Camera may shake a little tooo fast, and sides need walls. Collision gets a little buggy, and red blocks come down too fast.

I like this, it's a lot better than the screenshot looks. The controls are nice and smooth, although a little buggy when something lands on you. That should probably kill you, because the game is way too easy right now with no noticeable difficulty curve. The gun also seems a bit overpowered, and it feels wrong to have the falling blocks NOT fall when you shoot out the bottoms of them. The music is nice and the game is fun, and I also really like the little tree patterns the block tower makes.
