Self Destruct: Activated - jauntypixel - 48 Hour Competition Entry

You've defeated the evil aliens, and triggered their base's self destruct mechanism. The only problem? Your ship is on the other side of the base! Your only chance to escape is to outrun the explosion!

    Arrow keys - move/aim
    Z - jump
    X - shoot

You get pushed in the opposite direction when firing the gun. Use this to your advantage when faced with seemingly impossible jumps.

I love the explosion graphic, I'm not sure how well it blends with the rest of the graphics though. Liked the game overall, really fun and pretty exciting when you're inches away from losing and somehow make it. Nice job!

Fun game, although it would use a few more checkpoints. I loved the Metroid and Mega Man references.

Really well-done, and quite challenging. I couldn't get past the part with the stairs made of crates on the second screen, but I still found it really fun. The graphics are amazing, and the loop sounds great. The whole recoil thing didn't seem to do much, though, it only moved one a few pixels at a time. Perhaps if you used a bazooka instead of a pistol? Still a great game, nonetheless, definitely one of the better ones this dare.

@panzermancer The trick is to fire the pistol downwards while jumping - the recoil significantly adds to the height of your jump. I should probably have been more specific in the instructions.

Tough game but fun. Feels very old school. Also, it's REALLY hard.

The control is extremely inconsistent. I suspect that this is because Flixel uses a straight variable timestep(which makes physics behavior vary with framerate). The long hangtime is OK since you need it to shoot, but low horizontal dampening is not desirable for this kind of precise platformer.

Also, while I was able to figure out shooting the gun downwards, this mechanic was introduced as a requirement very suddenly. Up until that point I was having some fun with the game and liked seeing some simple puzzles mixed in, but that level put me into a rage between the new mechanics, the higher difficulty, and the control problems.

Also, I would have preferred sound effects to music given the choice since the music got pretty annoying.

First of all, I really like the graphics. Lots of great little touches, like the mega-man death explosion when you hit lasers. Also, I thought the protagonist was really well animated! The music did add tension although it was a big too simple/repetitive, especially without sound effects. The gun and recoil effects were fun. Had you imagined having enemies? I thought it was funny that the character was running around brandishing a gun at no one :)

I definitely found the game difficult. My biggest criticism is that all the important details are so small relative to the screen size. I feel like you could have upsampled your graphics to be twice as big and just made your floors/walls a bit less thick, and it would be easier to see what's going on and control.

Anyway, definitely a successful game. Good job!

Nice graphics, good controls and interesting use of the pistol. The second to last level could have use an extra checkpoint though.

Awesome awesome awesome oldschool style platformer. Very good looking graphics, would have loved to see (hear?) some sound effects. The effect with the gun push back was a great idea, I wish it had been better presented and more obstacles could have utilized it. Very tough though, I wasn't able to beat it. Love the game though!

Nice little escape runner. Not too innovative, but has a few good mechanics. Graphic are very simple, but most effects look nice.

Hard game, but fun. I also didn't figure out the shooting downwards thing. The graphics good, but it definitely needs some sound effects.

I can add very little which hasn't been said before. Staying in the middle of the screen is a must, too far back and you lose, too far forward and you run headfirst into obstacles.

    Punishing, but well-executed. Good work.

I really like the graphics of the game. The game is a bit hard though. I think there should be a few more save points, because otherwise it just gets a bit repetitive.

Almost everything is lovable. Wonderful game to sit up way too late at night playing with a friend, though unfortunately I have to battle alone at the moment.

I would have liked variable-height jumping, to feel like I am more in control. Would also be able to make small quick hops instead of always waiting for the full vertical range.

The second phase was too long and overly difficult. I had to retry that one at least 15 times not knowing how far the next checkpoint was. On the next one I got past most of it on my first attempt, though it was very well balanced and made me feel skilled. I might be giving up on the crate staircase with fall-downies above... at least this time around.

The continued scrolling after you die is a very neat way of showing a peek at the upcoming area before you have to approach it on your next life, although it's only really useful and desirable when you've reached further than previous attempts. You could consider cutting the restart cycle much shorter if you die on familiar ground (so there's less of a punishing wait).

awesome game, just a little too difficult (or actually as others have stated, its just too long inbetween respawn points. the difficulty is fine apart from that) the only other thing I found frustrating is how you can go so much faster than the screen scroll rate.. I guess I understand it's so you can get out of a scrape, but I also would have liked to build up a bit of a gap between me and the fire if I could move fast enough, which gives a little bit of a safety net for when you mess up.

all in all a fun and cool game tho!
