A Helicopter Named Freedom! - Codexus - 48 Hour Competition Entry

I finished a bit late sorry. I added a game over slightly past the hour but then I tested my game and had a last minute show stopping bug that I was too stupid to solve quickly at 4am. I hope that's OK usually LD is rather relaxed but if people get upset about that you can move me to the jam category.

FOR TESTERS: One thing that can be misleading is that the arrow will point to the general prison area when you go pick up prisoners not individual prisoners, you have to look for them yourself. Sometimes they spawn in the shadows and are hard to see. Also no sound, sorry I barely managed to finish a game this time.

Next time I'll try not to OCD over texture details, UV mapping and small misalignments in the meshes. I spent most of the weekend doing tedious adjustments that have little or no impact on the big picture v___v.

    Hope you like it!

Edit: Made one last mini bug fix 1h30 after the compo, the restart after the game over had some leftovers. I figured I might as well fix it since I was already late and for the convenience of the testers so that they don't have to restart the game.

    Nice concept.

So the important question is of course: Why doesn't it play Ride of the Valkyrie? :-)

Reminds me of Sim Copter which I loved to play. I had fun contemplating with a buddy why the inmates keep waving instead of running to the chopper when it's just a few meters away :P

I was disappointed that I could get on that big mountain.

I liked it! Beautiful world you constructed for this 48hr ditty. I liked the gameplay mechanic but did find it got dull a bit quickly. I'm more of an arcadey-fan than a Sim fan so maybe that's it. ;)

    Where's the audio/music?

    Solid entry. Great work.

Great controls, good looking game. It just lacks meaningful gameplay. Just being a taxi is a bit dry. Would also love some sound.

    Wonderful work for 48h.

Good work! The shadows are a too steap though, often by the time you see it, you've already (crashed horribly) landed. I also wish I could rotate the view with my XBox360 controller :)

I watched your timelapse and was impressed with all the 3D modeling and skinning you were able to do. 3D content creation tends to suck up the time, so 14+ hours for that doesn't surprise me. I thought you did a really good job on the helicopter model. This has the beginnings of a pretty cool game.

Post-compo thoughts: Some sounds and more people/cars running around would be a cool thing to see. It would make your little city really come to life.

    Nice job!

Like bitbof, this brought back nostalgic flashbacks to Sim Copter. I'm impressed by the graphics! Nice vehicle controls too. Good job!

Very impressive for only 48 hours.

Super impressive technically and visually, but get's repetitive quickly. As you said, maybe too much time was spent on details. :)
