Escape Paradise - kavs - 48 Hour Competition Entry
Web [Flash] | Source | Timelapse
This is my first LD ever, and while the game isn't anything worthy of too much praise, I had a great experience and learnt a lot for the next one.
Lessons:
1. Study up on tech BEFORE the compo starts. I spent a good chunk of time doing FlashPunk tutorials and things just to get my game going and it wasn't until Sunday where things really pulled together.
2. Keep it simple. I over-scoped bigtime on my game here and had to hack together gameplay at the very end. There is so much I wanted to do, but just no time.
3. Learn how to make music. I can do the art, coding, and effects just fine, but I am hopeless with music. For the next one!
Software:
FlashDevelop IDE
FlashPunk library (thanks Chevy!)
Photoshop
Ogmo level editor

Thanks!
EDIT: Some players are getting stuck inside collision when they change zones too close to a wall or water tile. It's rare, but try and 'zone' at least half a tile away from collidables. Also, it sometimes goes funky if you change zones too much (primarily around 1-1 and 1-2). Sorry. :(

Hey Gornova!
I really wanted to make the spiders wander (they have a full spritesheet to support it) but I just ran out of time. If I had another 6 hours I would have made them wander, animated the player, and added some game music... but such is the nature of LD48, I suppose! :)
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you have a deep appreciation of my beatboxing. Untz Unts Untz. <o/
I got stuck in a wall moving from that room in the first screenshot (with the spider) to the left. Still, a nice little game.
Ah shoot, I thought I removed all instances of that happening. :( I should have added an 'escape' hotkey for the compo that places you right in the middle of the room. Would have taken 3 minutes and prevented that from happening for LD.
Sorry to hear the time got the best of you, the game definitely would've been improved by some more challenges and animations. Still, very cute game and great work.
As mentioned, animations would be nice but I found it to be, short, simple and charming as-is :).
In-game music is the only way it's really lacking, IMHO. A little more challenge wouldn't hurt either but I thought having to gather food was enough, possibly perfect for LD.
I especially liked the visual theme and look of the character :).
I quite liked this! A bit thin on gameplay but it was surprisingly pleasing to wander around the island looking for supplies :)
pretty fun! but, I'm sad that this is the second 'stuck on a desert island' game I've played this compo where you can eat dodgy mushrooms, and there's no trippy visuals. Son I am dissapoint :P anyway apart from that well done :)
@wbobeirne, yeah, I would have loved to add some more challenges or at least moments where the player has to think. I have learnt a lot about pacing from this LD, so hopefully my next one is a bit better.
@jedi, if you watch my timelapse you'll see me fighting with myself to do the character animations. I feel like I'll never do them justice, so I just postponed it... indefinitely. ;)
@PaulSB, I'm glad you enjoyed wandering aimlessly!
@Rich, had I known my competition would be mushroom trips, I would have upped my game! :) How can I compete with that?!
Thank you guys so much for checking it out!
Nice solid work!
The basic mechanic (collect stuff) is nice, and the size of the island is just big enough for exploration, but not too big to get lost.
@matthias
Thanks! The world was supposed to be 8x8, but I'm happy I scaled down or it would have been so incredibly boring. ;) 4x4 is a good enough size for the scope of the game I ended up with.
Collision, combat, inventory, hunger - that's a LOT of systems for such a short compo, I'm impressed you got them all working! Fun to play, the hunger mechanic makes it pretty challenging too.
Nicely done!
Yeah, escaped! It was very close.
I like the mouthmade sounds. Got stuck once in a wall after changing the screen.
I agree that the gameplay lacks some variety and is somewhat boring, but the idea is sound. The intro music is awesome!
:-D
Loved the intro music. Some walking animation for the guy would be cool (I know time constraints). I quite enjoyed this, although I wish there were more to do.

add some wandering enemies :D
p.s: epic intro music!
