the dream forest - mes - 48 Hour Competition Entry
Windows Standalone | Cross-platform + Source (.love) | Timelapse
this short abstract exploration game is my first LD entry. i spent most of my time making sprites and music so there is not really much gameplay. there is a lot of atmosphere however. :) a playthrough will only take about five minutes.
controls:
LEFT, RIGHT - go left and right
UP - use umbrella
R - if limping around the forest is not your style (or you just don't like the anim), press this to engage beast mode
i developed the game with the love2d library, so it works on windows, mac, and linux. i've only included a standalone version for windows though; if you want to play it on another platform, download love from http://love2d.org/ and grab the .love file. the source is also in the .love file--just change the extension from .love to .zip and you can open it up to get at the lua files inside.
i had some more grandiose plans for this game but i ran out of time so i had to keep it pretty simple. if time permits, i'd like to do a bit more with it in the future.
update: timelapse added!

Wow, just wow! The atmosphere is so intense! It makes me angry that there is no way to rate the atmosphere of the game (why should every game be humorous?).
The best entry I've played so far. :)
thanks guys! an atmosphere voting category would be cool. not enough LD games focus on that imo- i think it's a great way to make a more memorable experience.
Hmmm I couldn't get it to work on XP. Looks interesting though!
sorry about that. i tried testing it earlier today on my office computer and discovered that it fails to play mine and pretty much all other love2d games. maybe you have the same issue? i didn't have a lot of time to debug but it unfortunately seemed like a somewhat fundamental library issue. :/
Very eerie atmosphere, I particularly loved the smooth animations. Sadly it`s very short. Nice job!
yeah nice ! <3 the subtle pixel graphics and the overall mood of this game. As kinta said it'd be better if the humor category was replaced by something a bit broader like "mood" or something.
It would have been cool to have more events or some branching for other walkthroughs though (unless I missed something in the cave ?).
Very cool for a solo 48h LD, hope you'll be able to add more content/story later !
Like everyone says, the music, graphics and ambiance for this game were great! Love2D seems impressive. I really wished there were more places to explore. Part of me wants backstory but part of me likes how cryptic it is... it might be nice to reveal things (either via text or terrain or something) in the terrain. As someone who also made a game which is just about exploring a world I appreciate the time you put in. Really promising, please keep developing it!
The atmosphere is definitively there. Beautiful! It is a shame the lack of gameplay. Please, make a post-compo extended version!
Absolutely beautiful. I really wish more games would use this kind of story telling.
Stunning.
thanks for the feedback everyone. it is definitely encouraging me to continue working on the extended version.
@superflat and anyone else having trouble running it: try upgrading your graphics drivers. doing that fixed the issue i was seeing on my other computer.
@TurboDindon: nope, you didn't miss anything. the cave is just scenery.
@d_m: i think you will like what i'm doing with the extended version. i'm keeping it pretty cryptic while trying to introduce some story through non-textual means.
breathtaking. the music was perfect. everything just felt right. one of my favourites of the whole competition.
Great look and atmosphere. I just wish you moved a bit faster...
Loved this! Extended version? When and where?
Btw, I've been making retro styled posters for some of the games that were made for LD. I did one for this game:

@grimloom: that is awesome! really nice posters. i think i like the one for mine most. :)
an update on the extended version: at this point i'm not extending this so much as turning it into a proper game. so it will probably take me a while. i'll post some stuff about it on the blog when i have more figured out.

I love the mood of the game !
