Caved In - alexlarioza - 48 Hour Competition Entry
Web | Source | Timelapse | Post Mortem | Post-Compo Version
Caved In was inspired by Minecraft, Terraria, Dwarf Fortress, and dungeon crawlers. The goal of the game is to ascend all five levels to the surface. Along the way you can collect treasures and save a few stranded ladies. Lava and water flow to fill gaps and will kill you if you stay in them too long. Full instructions in-game.
As regards to everyone have problems with walls:
You must hold either SHIFT or Z and then press UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT or W/A/S/D for the respective direction. If you have 2 or more bricks (which are gained from mining stone blocks) a wall will be created. You can't create a wall if you are too close to another object. Hope that helps. =]

The limited visibility and the expanding water and lava make this very interesting. But I eventualy got frustrated when I could not find the exit ladder.
I unfortunately can't tell you where to find it as it's randomly generated each time. =P But I'll give you a hint; each level is divided in thirds length-wise so that the player spawn, the woman, and the ladder occupy a random spot in their own third of the level. So if you spawn on the right, the ladder/woman is either in the middle or left of the level. Hope that helps with any frustrations. =] I wanted to add some kind of tool/indicator for finding the ladder but didn't have time (or an idea of what) to implement it.
You lost points because you collected "women". You could have said "victims" or "miners".
I like the sense of tension when you hear the explosions. You know there's a river of death somewhere, but you don't know where/when it's going to get you.
Solid effort, enjoyed it a lot, played it a few times. This is definitely one of my favs.
This is a pretty solid game, there are a lot of elements to it considering how quickly it was made. Only thing I didn't quite get was how building walls worked - actually got stuck in one and then I died :(
@SusanTheCat My girlfriend wanted to be worked into the game some how and that was my way of doing so. xD
@Pvaiun Thanks!
@kato9 There are still some bugs with making walls, I thought I had them all fixed but I guess not. =[
It was fun and I liked it, although I think it would've been better if instead of score the items just helped you find the exit. Something like gems and gold tell you a few places where the exit isn't (uncover random tiles) and maybe the woman could point in the exits direction. This might just be my personal dislike for score speaking though.
I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So charming, a tiny rogue-ish romp through a cave that I honestly don't want to leave.
Nice little game. Love digging around.
I think it could've really benefited from some sort of increasing difficulty as I found it quite hard to even get past stage 1 without any hints! :)
Overall: An amazing little title with some pretty creative elements.
I really like this game - love the graphical style, and it's a fun, quick play. My only problem is I've still not managed to build a wall (just doesn't seem to work!), which has meant each of my play sessions has been fairly short if a cave-in sets off lava or water!
Hmm, did just build some walls, but it seemed random when it worked and when it didn't! Got to level 3 that time, and I want to keep playing :)

I though it was fun. Very polished, nice pixel graphics and good sounds. I enjoyed tunneling, building walls, collecting gold, etc.
I hit a weird bug a few times where I was paralyzed and couldn't move. Also, I don't think having "women" be game objects that you collect is a great idea. Finally, it would be nice to use lighter colors for areas that the player has been to. Sometimes I had a hard time figuring out the path that water/lava would take.
There's quite a bit to this game and all the gameplay elements work pretty nicely together. This is definitely one of the best I've played so far.
One bug: Not sure how I got into this state, but at one point I couldn't move. I could dig out the walls around me and put down walls, but I couldn't move out of the space I was one.
On the whole, you've done an excellent job!
More fun than I've had with most roguelikes! Would have been more fun without the fog of war effect - I'd prefer to see where I'm going, even if it's hard to get there, than to stumble around. I'd buy this if it were more complete.
I really liked this. It was a lot like a roguelike, but it also played like an action-puzzler. I'd have maybe liked some more interesting worlds.
Fun. Awesome. Epicness. :D. I only have the complaint that the little hatching over areas where you have been is somewhat pointless, since you can still see those tiles updating...
Nice little exploration/escape game. Would've loved some music too :)
Nice game, although I felt like my success was highly up to chance. Also I wish it was easier to see which tiles I have not explored yet. The game reminded me a lot of a game called Dwarfs!? which also has the elements of mining for gold and blocking water and lava flows, but it's more of a strategy game instead of an adventure.
Nicely made, and quite a lot in it for a 48hr game. I think a slightly larger visible area may have made it more fun, though? (Unfortunately, I'm getting quite tired of the mining/building genre these days, though!)

Got 528! Kinda cute game. Length and complexity suitable for a compo.
