and just like that - skelethulu - 48 Hour Competition Entry

Built in flixel + tiled + garageband + flashdevelop + photoshop. I wanted to build something that tries to explain why I would spend 48 hours writing script and making crude pixels, why I would quit my steady job making AAA games to make small things that are given away for free, why if something is too good to be true, you should run from it, because it's fake.

UPDATE: due to popular demand from some people on my google plus, in the next day or two I will be releasing a Director's Cut version of this game that has all the levels (approx 8 more) that I had to cut because they were either too hard or unfinished (once I finish them). This version will also have a timer running (with a leaderboard for those what complete it), and each death will add some amount of time. Oh and when I release it I'll unlock all the secret rooms, too :) I'll post on the frontpage when this happens, as well as a post-mortem shortly after that.

    UPDATE: Post Mortem posted: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2011/08/23/and-just-like-that-a-post-mortem/

Nice point, nice way of making it, but cool game too. Ever consider being an indie full time? ;)

I actually have, and did a couple months ago! But man, taking the jump from a company that won't be going anywhere was super scary for my family.

Hey, don't be giving me any guff game, Flixel was just quicker to use than C++. *cries*
Never saw the 2nd and 3rd screenshots in the game.
Easily my favorite game so far, has it's minor issues and the gameplay isn't unique, and that section with all the guns was a tad too difficult, but an excellent game for sure and deserves to do well.

Beautiful game! Good sense of humor, music really sets the tone, the difficulty ramped up nicely... well, until the part where the music went out and became bullet hell. This game is a favorite.

Yeah, once the music changed, it was game over for me. Much too hard >_<. Fun though, and it felt like I had a companion with the messages popping up! Nicely done.

    Aug 23, 2011 @ 4:52am

This was beautiful. The best way to escape indeed.

PS: "is this distracting when i do this mid jump?" MOTHER FUUUUUUUU.... *crash*

PS2: If you have played the game but haven't finished. do it. it's worth it.

I felt the same way, escaping life for 48 hours. Best game so far.

YES IT IS DISTRACTING WHEN YOU DO THAT.
I'm mostly just annoyed now that I didn't see some of the secret areas, apparently!

Fantastic game, best one I've played so far for LD!
(also, DAMMIT, I took the tunnel assuming it was to some super awesome secret area, then I had to do all the hard parts again to get back!)

Supercute.. I love the atmosphere. I just had to play it until the end.

I thought the ending would be something other actually, but in either case, very nice.

What happens if you take the tunnel.. you really do start over on the flowerfield? :)

I escape from life to where you escaping from. I program all day every day and I like it very much, but sometimes things isn't going well or anyhow. Now that is when I go out with my girlfriend or with friends and play with my dog for some hours. But those hours getting boring soon so I need to get back to programming. The only problem is when I get back to the code, I just don't want to continue it anymore. Does anyone feel something similar to this?

Anyway the game is good, I liked the music very much, those blocks are awesome, cool guiding and hell I didn't find it distracting or hard at anywhere... Thanks for making it!

Amazing atmosphere. Everything just clicks so well. Usually entries are have an obvious angle where the developer knew "I'm bad at <thing> so I'll skimp on that and compensate elsewhere". In your entry I don't see such weaknesses. Even the level design feels well thought out; with the timings all lining up nicely to avoid forcing the player to wait for a platform.
I'll be finishing this one later :)

I actually got sent back to the flower field at the end, and didn't mind playing through again because I noticed the "alternate path" and wanted to check it out. Glad I did. Very enjoyable!

    "Falling down this pit will give you the good ending". This would have been ok if I didn't leave it till a 3rd playthrough! Nice game though. I will never be good enough ;_;

This is absolutely wonderful; love the 'nice' music, graphical style, simple yet enjoyable platforming, and the wry humour. :) (Did I tell you I love the music?)

This game was great! Fun platformer with good controls, the right amount of difficulty, and an interesting unreliable narrator. I know you plan to add a timer but I found that I really enjoyed the simplicity of the game... I didn't feel rushed and could absorb what the narrator was saying and the graphics. I think this was a fantastic job, especially when I think back to creating my entry for LD21 and what it felt like. Great!

d_m so you know: the Director's Cut's main path only changes slightly, and you won't know your time was being trialled. If you enter the challenge area (which will be kind of obvious), that's when a clock shows up.

Very good entry due to the excellent presentation (and funny "hints") - music is really great. After going through almost hundrer of entries I'm starting to be sick of platformers, but your's gave me hope :)

Great game, very cute. As much as I wanted to finish, I checked out tunnel for kicks and got sent back. Made me rage pretty hard. After that, I just couldn't see myself going through the whole level again.

    Congrats on the wonderful game!

A good start, but turns into pixel platformer very soon. It's not too frustrating though once you get the hang of it, but it's pretty hard on long levels. Graphics are cute, but not very complex or varied. Music is nice. levels getting weirder is a nice concept. Some indication which way a bullet is going would be nice.

The music in the first part was what made me stay. It's really good! Then it disappeared... and I went into the warp-tunnel to get the music again. X3

Then I realized that I'd have to redo the whole game from the beginning, and I was really mad. But oh well!

    Great game!
