    Anthill - G@briel - Competition Entry

My game is the story of an ant named Joe, who was captured by humans and placed in a anthill full of small arms, deadly for an ant.

This game was made in Game Maker 8 PRO.
The Source is included in the Windows file.

->The Post-mortem version had some bugs fixed and improved gameplay.

I just played through the game and I must say: It's way too hard and most of the time you have no idea what you're doing or where you're going. The best part is avoiding bullets and running in circles near the towers.

The controls are quite troublesome as you can turn very fast without going to a full stop (which probably mean that you're going to be hit by a bullet). Also I often hit the walls when walking in corridors.

It seems like you've aimed for too man features (different towers and levels and should maybe have focused more on the core game play. If the controls and movement of the ant had been polished, I wouldn't miss the arrow tower or rocket laucnher (especially the arrow tower.. it killed me way too often).

Definately a challenging game. Level 2 took some work to get through, and so far I've not made it through Level 3. I want to come back and play this game further - the auto save game feature is nice =)

My ant got stuck on walls where it felt like he should have just glided through. Other than that the controls seemed fine.

My ant died some pretty horrible deaths, all due to my mistakes of course =) The triple shot weapon is especially deadly.

First off, I think the artwork and sound are great, and the idea is fairly simple and neat. Couldn't get past level two though, as it was quite hard. The leaves should probably refill your health entirely, otherwise you lose way more health trying to get them than you gain back! I also didn't like getting stuck to the walls, as that was my most common cause of death.

I'm not really sure where the theme fits in. I tried getting two towers to fire at each other and blow each other up, but it was too hard to avoid getting shot myself. Other than that I don't know where the theme could be!

But well done on a nice attempt at a 48-hour game, and it does work. You could be proud of what you achieved in the time, and good luck with the next compo :)

    The difficulty level is impossible.

I have a few small suggestions that I think would improve your game a lot.

    1. Mouse control (Either the ant moves towards the mouse, or the mouse controls which direction the ant is facing.)
    2. Make it harder to get stopped by a wall that is roughly parallel to you.
    3. Start the ant at full health at the beginning of each level. After all, you restart at full health.

I think your game has potential to be pretty good, though in it's current state it's a bit difficult to play.

This is pretty ambitious! I'm impressed that you got all this done over the weekend.

Like other people here, I think my main grievance is that the ant's velocity is completely zeroed on colliding with walls (rather than only the perpendicular component being zeroed).

I also tried to get turrets to shoot each other, but it didn't seem to work. Are they invulnerable to each other's projectiles?

Anyway, congratulations on finishing! This was quite an undertaking.

    Good work, challenging levels.
I agree with everyone else here that the walls are too unforgiving. I also think that there should a dying sprite or something, as when you die the game pauses for a second before the you have died message appears.

    Thanks for the comments!
Based on your comments, i made a Post-Mortem version which can be downloaded in this link: http://dc152.4shared.com/download/96-7VECM/Anthill_V2.rar?tsid=20100829-005355-26bf694f
    Hope you enjoy!

It is kinda hard to dodge bullets, and it was too easy to get stuck on walls. You could probably introduce some direct controls (left to move left, up to move up, etc.) and add some more enemies.

What really bugged me though, is that I don't understand what this has to do with the theme. Reading the help text, it seems like you have taken the "weapons as enemies" interpretation, but I think even that is pretty vaguely used since all the enemies are gun turrets.

I also thought it was a bit annoying to go through the trouble of unlocking a laser door, dodging bullets, only to get a health powerup. Doing that probably made me lose as much life to begin with, and there's no other gain from doing that.

I was dissatisfied with your post-competition version, so I made my own variant.

    Changes:
-Running into an almost parallel wall gradually shifts your angle to match that of the wall, leaving you moving in roughly the same direction you were before.
-Health is set to full at the beginning of a level.

The game and source are still owned by G@briel, not by me. scr_ant_collision and scr_angle_difference are written by me, and may be used by anyone for any purpose.

Quiet nice game, remebered me back to my days when I was making games with Click&Create.
