Ludum Dare 17
New to Ludum Dare? Here are our judging guidelines.
They Came From the Ocean - bluescrn - Competition Entry
bluescrn's attempt at a little 48hr FPS. Not really 100% finished, but fairly playable
An island with black smokey monsters... surely nobody's done that before? :)
Mouse - Look/Turn
WASD or arrowkeys - Move/strafe
Left Mouse - Shoot
Right Mouse - Jump
Esc - Quit
F1 - Toggle Fullscreen
Requires DX9, with a Shader 2.0 card or above.
It's very inefficient, excessive amounts of draw calls, so may need a fairly quick PC!
I apologise in advance for those that have to hunt around for the right D3DX lib!

Very cool game. The black smoke monster idea is really good and they look really nice. I like the smooth controls and it feels well polished. Your games continue to inspire me since the first time I participated in a LD.

Looks neat, though my computer is too old to run this.

Stopped playing at wave 12!
I really liked it, the monsters creeped me out the first time they hit me.
The only thing that bothered me was that I could hear the shots hitting the monsters far far away.
Other than that, the game felt very well polished and professional.

Can't play yet because it requires d3dx9_42.dll... Can you distribute that with it?

Neat. Okay, on with the by the numbers commentary.
The good - graphics like wow. This game was gorgeous. Where the islands randomly generated? There's no source, so I have no idea.
The bad - simple gameplay, frequently got killed from behind by enemies that didnt seem to exist a second ago.
The Ugly - nope, it was pretty. Sound was minimal, but what was there worked.

missing d3dx9_42.dll, however, judging from the screens, my computer mey be to old :(

Couldn't play it as my graphics card lacks the proper capabilities. Pity, it looks very nice.

Made it to wave 15. I found myself an island that had good visibility. I liked the game, it reminded me of a first person centipede. =p

So great!!! It is a bit easy, because of the very high jumping power and the fact that the creatures only move on land. Controls were pretty good, and the swimming mechanic was great too. Sounds are a bit tedious, and would be much more intense if there were limited ammo (or you had to make pickups).
Loved the graphics, simply gorgeous. The monsters are very sweet.

The creatures are awesome.

The smoke monster looked awesome, especially when you're close up to its face.
Due to my card it ran rather jerky, sometimes fluid, sometimes slow. A bit less blur would be nice, it looks like playing without glasses on :)
A radar thing would be nice. On my first play I spotted a worm in the distance and suddenly fell down dead from one of the beasts sneaking up behind me.

Very shiny. The game itself is simple, and pretty easy. I played until level 9 before I started wondering what actually happens if the black things touch me. So then I walked right into one and died.
I like the screen border. Makes it seem like I'm in a submarine or a mech. Adds to the feeling of being hunted, when you kinda feel even more so like you can't really see around you at all times. Obviously you wouldn't even without the border, but the border enhances the feeling.
Again, very shiny.
