Logo Contest 2011
Hi, we’ve had various Ludum Dare logos over the years, but I think it’s time we got something new and shiny!
So we’re doing a contest! Make your Ludum Dare logo and enter it. Be sure to include a link to a hi-res version of the logo. All logos submitted will be considered as public domain gifts to the community.
The winner of the contest will get the honor of seeing the logo used to help promote Ludum Dare!
The contest begins NOW and ends Jan 31th.
(Judging will be decided somehow, probably a combination of public vote and what I like. We suggest linking to a 2000px wide image, or something like that. To make the logo useful, it should have transparency, so it can be placed on various types of backgrounds. If you want to enter multiple logos, just create an extra user account.)
Rotating logo (AKA everybody wins) - mjau - Competition Entry
example: pouet.net | my other entry
Idea: Have a rotating logo (ie changes on every page load). Given a standard/maximum logo size, everybody can draw their own logo to submit for inclusion in the rotation. New logos can be added whenever someone feels like drawing a new one (encourage people to do this), and old ones could be removed after a while if people get tired of them. Maybe have a rating system. (Some moderation would be required, anyway, at the very least to prevent spam).
Basically, let's rip off pouet.net (go there and hit refresh a couple times)
I guess we still need an official logo for official purposes, but I think this would be nice for the website.

Btw, if there's voting, make sure if this one's included, the voting doesn't get diluted by this one's inclusion.
I do like the idea a lot. Of course we might still need a logo that can be used for promotional purposes outside the website.
It would be fun but part of the point of a logo is to create and reinforce an identity, and a big part of that is repetition. Not necessarily for promotion (LD seems to promote itself pretty well already) but for recognition. i.e. if people see the logo on an article or youtube or something, you want them to recognize it and make the association. A rotating logo would would really undermine that.
Pouet works because they're all stylistically unified by "demoscene art". And even so I think it would be better if they had a single logo and rotated variations of it.
But having a multiple user-created versions of a banner, all based on the same logo is a fantastic idea. My design would work great for this (hint, hint..) but really the idea would work great for any of the designs, there are a bunch of good ones -- as long as we pick one.
This would be neat, but I think we still need one logo to characterize LD. The logo just wouldn't be as powerful if it kept changing around; we need just one to stick in our heads.
Works very well on Pouet, but logos would need to be kept to roughly the same dimensions, and work well with the LD site's chosen colourscheme.
Also, being a demoscene site, the quality of the Pouet logos is quite outstanding - which is at least partly why it works so well there - We'd probably want some sort of quality-control, too? (Also voted N/A, as the idea can't fairly be compared against other logos)
I don't like this, unfortunately. The competition really needs some sort of identity, and cycling visuals really hurts this for the community and the people taking interest.
I like the idea of cycling some user content on the front page though, and some opportunity to contribute. Art communities often do this with a mascot character, for example, with people contributing art. I'm not sure what would work for LD however.
Actually I love this idea. Given the amt of art talent and cool ideas that are likely to be had in the community, this would work really well. I'd say just have a standardized banner size (maybe a bit bigger than currently is) and rotate them.

Interesting I say... Interesting.
