Logo Contest 2011
Hi, we’ve had various Ludum Dare logos over the years, but I think it’s time we got something new and shiny!
So we’re doing a contest! Make your Ludum Dare logo and enter it. Be sure to include a link to a hi-res version of the logo. All logos submitted will be considered as public domain gifts to the community.
The winner of the contest will get the honor of seeing the logo used to help promote Ludum Dare!
The contest begins NOW and ends Jan 31th.
(Judging will be decided somehow, probably a combination of public vote and what I like. We suggest linking to a 2000px wide image, or something like that. To make the logo useful, it should have transparency, so it can be placed on various types of backgrounds. If you want to enter multiple logos, just create an extra user account.)
Hourglass - bluescrn - Competition Entry
Updated again 24 Jan @ 20:31pm - New render, hourglass mesh fixed a bit, bevels added
Updated 23 Jan @ 16:30pm - spent the afternoon learning a bit more about Blender, putting together a much shinier version of the concept, trying to take into account bits of feedback from IRC
Joystick idea shamelessly borrowed from a couple of the other entries...
(It's all done in Blender with minimal clean-up afterwards, so could be re-rendered against any background colour, or transparent)
Zip here with blender file, and a large render with alpha channel: http://www.bluescrn.net/projects/ldlogo.zip

I love the idea but the execution is a bit bland perhaps. What's with the dithered "glow" around the letters? I do like that the grains of sand look like pixels. It's like the hourglass is arranging the grains into beautiful patterns.
Made a pixely variation for fun: http://pekuja.com/pixel_bluescrn_ld.png
What if the hourglass would spill outside from the "2D plane" the logo otherwise resides in?
I like the hourglass theme. Might be probably handy to keep both the 2D and 3D versions of the logo around for different purposes.
BTW. stRana's entry includes a 2D vector (SVG) take on the bluescrn's hourglass idea.
That 3D version looks really great. What if the perspecrive was more straight on? I think that would work better as a logo.
This is cool as hell!
My only criticism is that, to me, it seems awkward how the M is just floating above the joystick. Perhaps the joystick could be slightly larger, allowing it to appear to be leaning on it somehow?
I really dig the darker blue one! I'm not really sure how to vote when I don't like one of them, but really like another? I guess I did the same thing, though.
I will vote as though only the one I really like was there :)
I'd LOVE a T-Shirt with this!! For the website, though, I don't think it works very well. =P
The rendering is really striking and the use of the hourglass is clever without affecting readability. Outstanding job!
Very professional! Wish it was wider, in a banner format to fill all that horizontal space.
Excellent technical work, and nice design overall. The 3D version kind of upstages the 2D one somewhat, and the hourglass kind of breaks up the form.. to me it reads as "LD", "DUM RE 48hr"...
The website mockup is a nice touch.
Overall a nice design and I'd be pleased if this one wins it.
Meh, If you're going to vote someone as low as 2/1/1/1/1, it's just a little impolite not to post any comments (constructive criticism or otherwise)... And tactical voting isn't really in the spirit of LD

This is a very good idea, I like that!
