Ludum MOD Dare (mini-dare)

Posted by
Sunday, May 5th, 2013 6:07 pm

I had this idea  after the LD26 …
“I ask myself if anyone did download the sources of the game to learn, mod it and have fun…”

So i came up with this, a proposition for all who want to join this Dare. A Ludum MOD Dare.

What is it?, simple.

After decided a theme for the Dare (and put a date), anyone who want to participate must.

1-Select a game with Sources published for the LAST LD (LD26).

2-Mod the game to match the new theme.

3- Post it! (and give credits to the original author to).

The Mod will be evaluated with this terms.
- Affinity to the new theme
- Closeness to the original game (more similar to the original, better)

LD Warmup: Unity 3d / Photon Networking Tutorial Livestream

Posted by
Friday, April 19th, 2013 7:41 am

Livestream will begin at 16:00 UTC on Saturday, April 20.

http://www.twitch.tv/quill18

I’ve already made one Unity 3d Multiplayer Tutorial, but there have been a lot of people asking for more depth and details, plus for an example of a multiplayer FPS specifically.

I’ve been in contact with the amazing people over at Exit Games (the Photon people) and they’ve arranged a 1,500 concurrent user demo server (my livestreams have peaked at 4,500 viewers — though I don’t expect that many tomorrow).

It should be an awesome time. This is also going to act as a warm-up for Ludum Dare. Make sure to go to the Twitch.TV channel and “follow” to be alerted when we go live.

If you can’t make it, videos should be available later on my quill18creates channel on YouTube.

I’m going to attempt to place the complete project on the Unity asset site afterwards, assuming I can figure out the submission process.

101 entries rated : My top 20 (well…top 19 + my game)

I’ve never been that lazy to rate LD entries. On previous LDs I always rated more than 200 games, but strangely, this rating fever has cooled down, and now, I prefer to spend more time on each game and try to give more constructive feedbacks. Maybe it’s for the best.

Anyway, here are my favorites so far, the ones I already reviewed in french on my blog http://oujevipo.fr. This list doesn’t include all of my favorites, some of them (especially Jam entries) being too obvisouly great for needing a little push up. (Sorry for my bad english by the way, I’m not even sure “push up” DOES mean something).

This list doesn’t really care if the game is compo or jam, neither if it fits well the theme but I added this :

:D : Excellent use of the theme

:) : Good use of the theme

:( : bad/no use of the theme

(click the pictures to play/rate)

#1 Cure 48 :D

#2 Tale of Scale :(

#3 Monologuer :D

so far……. 60 Second BAD BOY!!

1985 Qbasic still charging through

Posted by
Saturday, August 25th, 2012 5:34 pm

1278 lines of code (probably going to be around 5000 whenever I finished.) and I thought I would go for the simplistic approach. Really like how the game is coming.

You control the protagonist with WASD (he is constantly moving at a faster rate) all the while controlling the arrow keys to try and shift your guy down gears even though the only way to kill enemies is with speed!

Qbasic oh how I love you <3

The Hack-a-Jam

Posted by
Friday, June 29th, 2012 8:47 pm

Visit here!

Hey everyone! I am glad to announce that the second Hack-a-Jam will be starting on July 14, and I am your host.

The Hack-a-Jam is a gaming jam that is different from others. Instead of one overall winner, there is an infinite amount of categories that you can win in, and there will always be multiple winners. Here are some examples of categories you can win in:

Best Graphics
Best Audio
Most extra items (dev logs, etc.)
Most Creative
Most Glitch-free
Longest Game
Shortest Game
Hardest Game
Easiest Game
Best themed
Most fun game

The amount of time given in the jam is voted on by the community, along with the theme. You can submit themes, and most of them will be sent to the Polls section, where others can vote on themes.

The Hack-a-Jam logo

By winning, you will get a badge and bragging rights, along with your name listed on the website permanently as a winner. When this jam gets to be huge, you will be really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really famous! The rules are not very restricted, as the jam is purely for fun:

1. All game content must be created within the set time. Note: You can use other music, placeholder graphics, etc. as long as you are allowed to!
2. Your game is not required to follow the theme, but would greatly improve your chances of winning. Unless every other game is not following the theme, it is almost guaranteed that your game won’t win anything.
3. You must work alone, and you must create everything included in the game.
4. All game creation tools are permitted, such as GameMaker, Photoshop, Flash, Paint, etc. Note: By game creation tools, I mean any tools that can be used to create your game.
5. All game extensions/DLLs are permitted. If you want to make it multiplayer (if you are using GameMaker), go ahead and use 39dll.

The second Hack-a-Jam takes place on July 14, so you should sign up now! Good luck everyone!

Hello everyone. I’m in for Ludum Dare 23 and will try my self made java engine JUltraGame which you can find at https://github.com/neosam/JUltraGame

Also I will use

  • LMMS to make music,
  • sfxr or bfxr for game sound
  • Gimp, Inkscape or Blender for grahics (I will decide it next weekend :)
  • IntelliJ Idea as IDE
  • Ubuntu Linux as OS

For the timelapse I will use some of my self written bash scripts. I will upload them soon on https://github.com/neosam/scripts

This time I will be prepared, last time I didn’t finish… I also take part on the LD Test this weekend.

Good luck and much fun everyone!

Some Testable Progress

Posted by
Saturday, December 17th, 2011 3:13 pm

I have put a small demo online to test my code long before the deadline :)

It is a Html5 canvas game which means that it will only work in quite modern browsers.

Use the arrow keys to walk around. You can’t do anything else yet :) .
The game is about not ending up alone and miserable in a hostile social situation.

Here is also a screenshot:

I present to you…

SPAM KNIGHT!

My warmup game for Ludum Dare #22.

I had to drop some of my to-do list, but it’s a finished, working game.  Whee!

Click on the image to play it!

Update: Fixed a few bugs.  You can now play (and beat) level 6. :)

Warm-up Complete! – Journey to the Bottom of the Sea

Posted by
Sunday, December 11th, 2011 7:54 pm

It’s done!

I managed to finish everything I said I would add (except for music), so I feel pretty good about calling this complete.

Apparently I can’t submit it though, presumably because I already submitted a warmup. Is it one entry per account? I thought Ludum Dare allowed you to enter as many games as you’d like.

Oh well, here is the link to the final version anyway.

Warm-up: Radiation

Posted by (twitter: @iammitch)
Sunday, December 11th, 2011 2:18 am

I’ve spent what time I’ve had over the weekend working on a somewhat random game, while getting used to programming with SFML in C++ (Somewhat similar to C#, but slightly different). This is what I’ve gotten up to so far:

I’m liking the idea that I generated from this theme ( Collect Radiation, Power Buildings using Radiation, Protect Buildings from Radiation ), and will most likely finish this up during the week.

Achieved:

  • Loading Resources
  • Handling Input
  • Scene Management
Working On:
  • Sounds (Fairly straight forward though)
  • Displaying Text (Also straight forward)

Warmup… Nearly…. Done. And so am I.

Well, the warmup is nearly done.

Everything on my todo list is done save:

  • Win game dialog.
  • Title screen.
  • Auto-save/load game.
  • Sound effects of any kind. :)
  • Levels 2-10
  • And the intro story!
As before, you can click on the image to give it a shot.  The game stops working, technically, once you beat level one.

Oh dear! I am falling behind my schedule. However, I do have working player movement, at the moment.

I guess that is something! You can click on the image to try it out.

Warmup tyme!

Alright, so while I don’t really have time for it this weekend, I am going to make a little, just to do a warmup game.

The concept so far:  You are an evil spam message, and you must make your way towards the unsuspecting user.

My theme was generated by The Official Sos Theme Generator, of course.

Post-mortem: Timelapse!

Posted by (twitter: @asiekierka)
Monday, August 22nd, 2011 5:22 am

Right! So I’ve made a timelapse during this whole thing! It’s split into two parts:

Part 1: Singleplayer. Uploaded during the compo and posted on IRC.
Part 2: Multiplayer. Uploaded a moment ago.

The two songs used in them represent the two anime soundtracks that helped me keep motivated throughout the compo. (Haha)

Computers used:

Battleship ASUS in action

Battleship Asus: Android tablet running Ubuntu 11.04. (AH THE DETERMINATION)

Battleship PC: A quad-core PC with 4GB of RAM, used towards the end of timelapse part 2.

Apps used: gedit, terminal, javac, zip, mtpaint, nano, wc -l, etc.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Ludum Dare

Posted by (twitter: @asiekierka)
Friday, August 12th, 2011 9:18 am

So I thought I wouldn’t join LD #21. I already spent too much time working on my own game, and overall, I was too la—

And then I saw her face! (hint: click on it)

NOW I'M A BELIEVER (Haruhiism FTW!)

YAY, SUZUMIYA HARUHI

Right. So after seeing that, I decided to join this little Ludum Dare thingy. Sadly, I think there are a few copyright rules in so I won’t actually be able to USE Haruhi… Or will I?

We’ll see!

What libraries will I use? Uhh, I’m not sure, probably something obscure again… We’ll see, we’ll see, we’ll definitely see.

I’ll follow up with code/library declarations in a few days.

Maybe… maybe not

Well, I might be entering the Ludum Dare 19 (first one w00t), though, there is a small problem… namely having to do with my main computer being busted for the time being. If I am still able to participate, then I’ll prolly end up doing the Jam, not the Dare, but oh well….

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyways, luckily I will still have a different computer to use, but I don’t have my time-lapse software, and it’s also a shared machine, but oh well… I still have teh power of awesomeness!~ ne?

Obligitory equipment post:

Game Maker 8 (Lite), MS-Paint (or default sprite editor in GM8), SFXR… random computer…

what is there to say?

I will be in the Ludum Dare 15
