Programmer. Loves to do stupid things. Like spending a weekend programming a game from scratch instead of hanging out, drinkin' (though both is also possible)

First MiniLD! Though I had like 4-5 normal LDs
Sunday, May 20th, 2012 11:43 amFirst time participating in a mini LD! Had nothing better to do, and when I was browsing around, checking my RSS, I was like: ‘huh, MiniLD is this weekend? Aspect? Sounds interesting! I’ll take 1024 x 128.” I wanted to create some minigames with my Chicken character anyway, so why not? It was a bit of a shock though to see for the first time, that 1024 x 128 was in fact wider than I thought it would be
. Nice choosing of the theme!

*insert lots of ranting like I did the LDs before
*
*insert congrats to 10 years LD like “CONGRATULATIONS TO 10 YEARS OF LUDUM DARE!!!”*
TL;DR
Used: Flixel, FlashBuilder, Paint.NET, GraphicsGale, Google App Engine, Eclipse, sfxr
Good:
- made a game which connects to a backend server, something I wanted to do in a long time
- played with Google App Engine, something I also wanted to do in a long time
- I made a generic jumping game, also something I wanted to do as a case study. also, I don’t move the cars and I don’t move any camera, I just move the world
(like the spaceship in Futurama does)
Bad:
- I was hoping for survival, but meh
- I’m not scared to look into library code, and for this LD, I dived a bit into flixel to get a continuous background animation and some other stuff. Still, I should have done it as warmup, as it took a bit time
- it took way to long to create a servlet with about 100 lines of code. too many bugs and it ate up 4hours
- had to release a bugfix because I was programming in Flash Builder, which deactivates the security sandbox, making the game get stuck. Didn’t realize that until this morning
- I forgot to give the game a name! When I opened the upload form, I had to reopen my mainscreen.png and add a name to it
- I don’t feel that the game I made represents my thinking. It’s not funny, and I like funny games :/
And it’s >GAMETIME<
Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 12:18 pmmeaning, I’m done. Not with the game, but I can’t keep going anymore :/. It’s still playable though. Tired. Unconvinced. Game over. Finito. The last 4 hours I was having bugs over and over again, and then Google App Engine keeps kicking me in the nuts for errors
Anyhow, …*uploading*…

Saturday, April 21st, 2012 12:58 amIt’s 10 in the morning here in Germany, and my alarm clock woke me up at 6 for me to get the theme of this LD. till now it was enough time for me to continue sleeping plus think about an idea while i was still groggy
Tiny world it is? What I get from that is King Kai from DragonBall, the guy that lives on a small planet

Warmup done
Monday, April 16th, 2012 4:39 amPlayBook devs here? Offer by RIM
Thursday, April 12th, 2012 12:03 pmHey guys! Maybe some of you know, some don’t, but ever since the first October challenge came out (make an app, make a dollar!), quite a few of us have started making apps and publishing them to any app store/market/world/whatever.
Now here’s something that RIM has published (just got the mail) which I thought I should share with you. Essentially it’s the third promo I know of by RIM to get more apps into their App World ^^ (the first two were free playbook devices):
On April 10, 2012 at 12:01 am EST, every 100’th NEW app submitted is eligible for a Prize Package that will bring you to BlackBerry 10 Jam in Orlando, Florida from May 1-3. The 100 app submitted must be approved according to BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines and the trip is awarded to vendor of the application. The contest closes on April 26 at midnight EST.
The prize package includes $500 USD cash, a voucher for an airline ticket (up to $1,500 USD in North America and $2,500 USD outside of North America), and a pass to BlackBerry 10 Jam on May 1-3 with four nights hotel.
To make the submission process as easy as possible, simply bring any new app to BlackBerry App World and—if you meet the BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines—you’ll have an opportunity to win the prize package.
Winners will be notified by primary email on their BlackBerry App World vendor account. Watch for the latest news at devblog.blackberry.com.
Cheers,
The BlackBerry Developer Program Team
*Full Terms and conditions for the “Attend BlackBerry 10 Jam courtesy of RIM! Contest” offer are located at http://us.blackberry.com//developers/started/100appcontest.jsp.
it’s a bit of a hassle to package apps and signing them, but when you got it, it’s quite simple.
Also, what I just read on Facebook:
Heads up! Attendees of the BlackBerry 10 Jam Conference in Orlando, FL May 1-3 will receive the exclusive BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha prototype device. Get hands-on time with the next generation OS and BlackBerry 10 tools!
so now it’s getting funny
. as some of us will make something this weekend (me too!) plus the apps made in LD, why not starting spamming RIM with shovelware apps
. some of us might even get a free trip to florida (posts please!)
one more thing: it’s not like i want to be a promoter for RIM, but i thought i should share
