Halifax 1917 is back!

Hi folks,

Here’s the latest build of the game :

http://kapokmedia.com/halifax1917/2011_02_26/

It is a test level, for development purposes. No fire in this version, no time limit. But there is a usable ladder, water depletion, a water bottle pickup, and a destructible DOOR!

Currently I didn’t add an axe to the player, but you can mimic hitting the door by pressing SPACE. You can do this from anywhere on the stage… will be fixed soon :)

Post LD23 : Halifax 1917, todo list

As I have said last week, I have decided to finish this game, and I will probably submit it to Kongregate or some other flash game portal.

I have set up a public todo list on toodledo.com, so we can monitor what is done and what is left to do.

todo list of Halifax 1917

If you find bugs, if you have features that you’d like implemented, go ahead and add them here! I’ll add them to the todo list if they make sense :)

Halifax 1917, game over

HA!

So, it was a bit harder than I thought. Managing time is a skill that I still need to master. The game was 80% completed, as it is still missing a winning state, a proper intro state, sounds, music, and some level design. My post-mortem shall follow soon enough.

I guess I can still submit my game, even if it ain’t finished. Oh well!

Halifax 1917, almost end of day 2

Well well well, things went quite well, even if not at the speed at which I hoped they would go.

I now have working water meter, people to save (but can’t be saved at the moment), fire, water taking out fires, a basic tileset of wood, a level design, and….. that’s it I guess!

Remaining : a score, sounds, music, a gameover screen, a real intro screen. Then and only then will it be possible to call this a game.

Alright. So today, I’ve done assets and animation (player, fire, skeletal remains, brick house backdrop and part of the HUD).

Todo list for tomorrow :

  • Shoot water from gun
  • Extinguish fire with water
  • Civilians to save
  • Time tracking / score
  • Update of the HUD
  • A basic level design
  • Sounds
  • Music

Nice to have :

  • Objects
  • Objects on fire
  • Topdown view where you choose the building you want to rescue, like a hub of some sorts
  • An intro animation, with the cargo ships

Alright, good work everyone!

Alright! So I have done the first graphical asset! An idle firefighter, aka you, once you’ll play the game. :D

The game revolves around the huge explosion that happened in Halifax in 1917. You not only need to put out fires with a limited amount of water, but also you need to save all the civilians that you can. Doing so will rise your Courage meter, that goes down over time. Once you don’t have anymore courage or water, you lose. It might be a game with no end, the goal being to get the highest score possible determined by time.

Next up : animating the firefighter, then some gameplay, then some more assets, then sound effects, then music, then title screen.

Let’s see how it goes…

Quick notice : Last minute change… switched FlashBuilder to FlashDevelop. I’m gonna have fun :)

D-D-D-Declarations!

Oh yeah, this is my first LD! :D

I have found the idea, the music kind, the mechanics… I just hope it’ll be the “Title of your game must be a year” theme, ’cause otherwise I’ll have to shoehorn my idea or something… So far it’s a 2D game, topdown, about a firefighter rescuing people in a very specific moment in history… More on that later!

I’ll be using AS3 and FlashBuilder (the Flixel framework, most probably), Photoshop, musagi, sfxr, and chronolapse! Also, I’ll be using a SVN system to reduce the “undoable catastrophe” damage ratio, if ever there is one. I hope everyone uses a version control system of some kind.

During the compo I’ll be blog my ideas and how I expect to expand them, and how everything goes.

Aaaaaaaaannndd I will also be updating my personal blog over here : clicky

KICKASS WEEKEND, ENGAGE!
