No mo’ Poe

Had some problems getting Flixel to do what I wanted it to, so I switched to Flash Punk and have been getting some great results. Finished prototyping the mechanics and they’re pretty fun!

Have been taking it easy during this jam (~3 hours of work a day), but I intend to finish this game by tomorrow. A lot of aesthetic work to be done, but everything is laid out for a smooth finish.

Sampled some graphics and have the outline for game mechanics.

Doing a mixed-strategy RPS style game with a hidden Markov model for the AI opponent.

Using Flixel to put everything together.

I’m going to make a game for Poe’s poem “Alone”.

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were — I have not seen
As others saw — I could not bring
My passions from a common spring —
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow — I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone —
And all I lov’d — I lov’d alone —
Then — in my childhood — in the dawn
Of a most stormy life — was drawn

The mystery which binds me still —
From the torrent, or the fountain —
From the red cliff of the mountain —
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold —
From the lightning in the sky

And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view —

Input is pretty much finished, and I have a framework for timed animation. I’m going to take a short break and get to work on the wall and some pixel shaders! Thinking about music- which should be interesting.

Got some code going. No wall, collision detection, or gameplay yet, but the main character’s animations are halfway done. I hope to have at least some gameplay done by tonight, along with some environmental polish.

Going to bed – No code yet, but I think I’ve settled on SDL for video. Using GraphicsGale for graphics, but I’m somewhat frustrated it won’t open gif files.
