I participated in this Ludum Dare, but until now I haven’t wrote a thing. On other LD’s I’d find time to post pictures of my food and show early builds of my game. This time however I had such a weird idea for a game! And it took me far longer than I’d expected to make everything work. In the end I wasn’t even in time for the Compo so I decided to join the Jam. Here’s what my game turned out to be: The Villain Complex

It took some time, but I’m finally starting to see how my entry could turn into something cool ^^. Here’s what my game looks like now:
The game is going to be about surviving as a species. You run around, fight guys and collect food. By carefully selecting who gets to have children you control the evolutionary process of your species.
Now it’s time to make me some dinner!
So yeah progress is going slow, but it’s coming. I’ve got some animals running around in a pack and attacking and stuff, it’s pretty neat :3
Anyway, here’s what I had for lunch:
4 sandwiches, one with cheese, one with apricot jam, one with peanut butter and one with plain butter. Also a glass of milk
Here’s what I did until now. Last night I stayed up till 3:00 AM because I live in the Netherlands, so that’s when the theme got announced. I’d actually woken up that day at half past 1 so I could push my eating schedule a little back to actually make it till 3:00 . When I heard the theme I came up with a game idea and then I went to bed.
Initially I thought of making a game in which you as a character evolve, but I’d actually already done that once and I wagered probably 90 percent of the people would probably be doing such a thing. I wanted something that was a little more true to the concept of evolution. Here’s what I’ve come up with: you are a group of animals with a bunch of random stats for walking, jumping/flying, attacking and defending. You control all the characters of this group at once, but you can choose to control a specific part by ranking them in best (or worst) of a specific stats category. This way you can choose the once that are best at attacking and take them out for hunting. The cool part is that you can choose a specific group to mate and they’ll have babies whose stats are based on the chosen mating partners, this way you can steer in which way your species will evovle! The goal of the game is to survive as a species by whatever strategy you think is best. Maybe you’ll try and create a giant flock and protect everyone, or maybe you’ll only select the strongest (Spartan style!) and use them to run around the world and eat everything you find.
The game will be sortof birds-eye-view fake 3D-ish and it’ll be made in Flash. This compo I will try to focus more on art than I did last time and I’ll try to do something special with it
So yeah, Soul Searchin’ placed 4th overall :O which is a score I’m pretty pleased about ^^ thanks everyone who rated my entry!
I’ve decided to continue working on this game and to try and publish it. The new version’s got:
- A new world: the world of Fears (*tam tam taam!*)
- 2 new pieces of music (one for the world of Desires and one for the world of Fears)
- Better controls.
- A more haunting ending.
- And general small fixes :3
The post-compo version is as good as done. Right now, I’m looking for play testers who want to help me make this game even better and iron out the last little quirks.

I thought I’d figured something out for the graphical style, but it turned out to be stupid. So I’ve decided to stick with the style I previously had which is just black boxes (more colours coming soon ). Anyway, the game now has about 6 levels, go check it out:

So, I just had a trip to the supermarket on my longboard. Sadly enough I hadn’t realized the world outside my house was dark, rainy, wet and disgusting (typically Dutch -_-). Result: my longboard is now dirty
Luckily some happy things occurred too. I am now in the possession of more food ^^. Here’s a picture of what I bought:
A loaf of bread, 2 bags of Casave Crisps, a Pizza and a little bucket of Fillet American ^^
Time to eat that pizza and then back to work!
Things have been going pretty smooth ^^. I think my main mechanism of shrinking into smaller worlds works now. If you’re interested try it out:
Arrow keys to move. ‘A’ to shrink/unshrink.
(You can shrink down one level per room)
Everything works pretty fine until you reach about the 20th level. My guess is that you run out of float or double or long spaces (whatever as3 uses as ‘Number’ <- blegh!) causing stuff to go wrong. But I’ll figure out a way to solve that ^^.
Now it’s time to get myself some din dins :3
