got most of the textures and 3D models together (this will be my first game using crazybump, having fun with that :D ). having fun exploring in the pitch black, but starting to feel pretty drained. need me a break!

yeah, I got some of that I think :D

got the guy running around in unity, and set the lighting up more or less how I want it, have been streaming over at twitch.tv/sophiehoulden, if anyone is interested. though I’m about to head down to the CB2 meetup, dunno what the internet there is like so the stream may die until this evening.

I had an ideo before I went to sleep, which made a nice change, tweaked it a bit this morning, made a concept. and I think I’m ready to start :D

The game is called "DogFight", it has dogs, fighting, with guns!

I got bored yesterday replying to a bunch of emails, so I made this warmup game. warmup postmortem: sphere colliders are better than capsule colliders for some stuff, capsule colliders don’t like to be rotated. also, it’s hard to aim in this game.

So, I’m totally down for LD this weekend. and not only am I down, I’m setting my sights on overall 1st place. you want that title, you have to beat me to it! :D

Looking forward to this weekend, I expect this LD to be much fun! also, I’ll totally be at the CB2 meetup!

FileKiller – The most horrific game I can make

So I’m busy this weekend, but I figured I’d have time for a simple (but EVIL) game.

  • The game selects 20 files from your computer at random
  • to win, you must delete them all
  • you don’t know what each file is until AFTER you’ve deleted it.
  • files 10 and 20 are folders, deleting them deletes everything in them
  • there is no undo
this game is real, and yes, it could seriously fuck up your computer/work/job/life.

So I managed to get pretty damn far within the compo time I think, managed to make the game code complete, playable and finishable, it’s just lacking enough levels and some sfx. I figured I could spend the last hours missing sleep and cram those in, or I could get a good nights rest and finish off the game today instead. I always choose a good nights rest, always :)

I really like making tilable level pieces, but I forgot how much I hate slotting them together. this final stretch is likely to be a drag, but at least right now I have everything done and working except levels, and sound effects.

got 5 hours to go, I can manage I think/hope :)

Long overdue for a blog update I think! let’s see, since the last update I added some basic police AI, some pathfinding (yay!) and shooting from the water pistol makes puddles now.

up next is a little extra AI behaviour (slipping in puddles, getting aggravated when wet, hears noises), also I want visual sound effects (like in a comics). after that it’s just making levels… and the 3D models that levels are made from… whew, starting to sound like a lot now I’m well into day 2, I guess I could make this a jam game, but I’m considering that to be defeat at this point, I CAN MAKE IT! :D

So I woke up this morning and almost immediately had an idea! in this game you’ll play as a guy in the near future, arrested for tweeting about planning a water fight. you must escape prison, and recover your water pistol to wet police, and leave puddles for them to slip in!

progress so far is I have a player that can run around (modelled and animated woo) , water pistol that shoots loads of droplets and can be refilled from a pool, and a dash move that lets you smash through stuff that’s weak.

to do next is making droplets form puddles, after that, it’s lots and lots of AI stuff and working on enemies.

anyhoo, getting back to it now! good luck everyone :D

just an FYI, I released a tool to help with texturing 3D models recently, there’s a free version and it may help with your ludum dare weekend if you find you normally spend too long texturing your 3D models.

Weekend of the 14th of February, starting at the usual time.

…and by that, I mean the weekend before, so that’s 12th-13th, so the real start time is:

4am, Saturday February 12th UTC — 9pm Friday Feburary 11th EST/6pm PST

MiniLD #24 starts 361 days, 19 hours, 55 minutes, 48 seconds ago

of course you’re welcome to enter whenever you like, I’m not strict with mini times <3

Going to announce the ‘theme’ early since it’s a mini, I’m relaxed with rules and time so do what you like.

Theme: Pick ‘n’ Mix

here’s how it’s going to work, I have lists of themes, limitations and rules. pick one (or more) of each and go!

Themes:

  • True Love
  • Tainted Love
  • Inside-out
  • Alternate universe spinoff of a major franchise
  • Tetris is now a <genre other than puzzle> game!
  • Fishing

Limitations:

  • 2 button input only
  • 1 button input only
  • 2 colours
  • Game must end in 60 seconds
  • All audio must be your own voice
  • Framerate cap at 5fps

Rules:

  • All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes
  • Work with a partner
  • Use a tool/language you have never used before
  • Wear something absurd whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to youtube when done.
  • Wear nothing whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to amateur porn site when done.
  • Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

there you go, pick one or more from each section, or do your own thing, it’s only a mini after all.

regarding times, make the game across whatever 48 hour(ish) period you like, spend more than 48 hours or spend less, I don’t care. submissions will be open for probably about a week after the weekend noted above, but if you want to dev alongside others, make your game over that weekend :)

Totally taking part of course, and I’ll be doing it along with the other cambridge indies since I totally live nearby now.

what tools will I use? NOTHING BUT MY BARE HANDS, I SHALL POUND THE DIRT AND FROM IT SHALL RISE A GAME!

or I might use the usual stuff; unity, blender, sfxr, stuff. whatever.

So I’ll be making a sequel/remake in 3D of my first Ludum Dare game ‘Ramuh-Shmoo‘ (here’s a link to the playable version on my site if you like)

rst02it’s super ugly but the key things are almost all working, so I can get to prettying it and then making some actual levels (yeah, those are my priorities, screw you practical people, you’re no fun! :P )

Much like 3 years ago, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to make the cables, but this time I wanted the cables to be 3D, have collision, and be grabable and fixable at either, both or neither ends, which I got working for the first time ever :D

anyway, I think this should be fun, to compare how I take a similar project with one weekend 3 years apart :)

Witchification after 1 week

witchyscreenSo, here’s what it does/you can do:

  • Procedurally generated dungeons
  • Enemies with some AI and pathfinding
  • Item collecting, storing, using, dropping and crafting
  • save and load (not all data saved right now)
  • Chests with items
  • If you are killed, you lose your items, and must return to get them back

Kill enemies till you find the keyspell, that lets you get to the next level, and so on. also the only useful item you can get from crafting is a rare goop (combine goop and a keyspell) otherwise you get… something else :P

witchyShotSo, I’m going for a roguelike arena shooter RPG with both witches, and crafting :D

to be honest, the ‘sell one copy’ target might not be suitable for me, I need to raise money for moving costs as well as living and other stuff, so hopefully this can be a decent game and not just a ‘made a game solda game’ novelty.

anyway, put a lot of thought into this whilst working on my Indie Kombat game, so Ima get to it!

going to announce date, as well as themes and rules all at once, to make a nice change

  • theme: Greatest Fear.
  • rule: Collaborate with someone who has never worked on a game before.

you don’t *have* to work with someone else, it’s optional, but encouraged. and collaboration can be of any level, as long as someone (or thing, I won’t discriminate against pets, zoo animals or alien encounters of the game kind) contributes something, be it level design, a doodle on paper you scan and use as a sprite, photos of them for character frames, or writes the dialogue, or voice acts… whatever.

and due to the nature of this rule, these contributions can be made at any time, before, during, or after the weekend of the mini (and I’m super lenient with time anyway, so feel free to take your own 48 hour-ish chunk out of September as you please for putting it all together, the weekend date is mostly so if you want to work alongside others its then).

  • the start date: 3am GMT/UTC 25th September.
  • end date (not strict): 3am GMT/UTC 27th September.

but like I say, its loose so do whatever suits you.

also judging entries; I know some people like to have minis with a round of judging, I wont be having that, and it’s not up for discussion.

also also, it’s my hope that people will explore what their real greatest fear is through the games they make during this mini, but you are welcome to interpret the theme how you like, or disregard it all-together.

any questions about the rules or anything just comment on this post, but as a general rule anything you want to do, I’m cool with :)
