Purple Reign - A love letter to awesome games.

Of course I didn’t finish!

So I didn’t manage to put more than one enemy in, or add any more than one weapon. (I spent most of the day doing pathfinding, and they still run around in circles in some situations!)

What I did come up with was a 6 level demo of something that may become an even better game, as it stands it’s very playable!

Windows binaries are here: http://myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/12/PurpleReign.rar

It comes with a readme to tell you how to play.

Thanks for another awesome weekend everyone!

[EDIT]

Turns out the dev tool I used has a ridiculous bug in Vista where it attempts to create a full screen window but most of the time just crashes. If you can’t play download this patch which simply just forces windowed mode. It might fix a couple of other crashes too.

Now with aliens.

Hurrah! That’s better.

(My game still has no name, does anyone have any ideas?)

Although my screenshots don’t look like much progress, I have got a lot futher.

My game has been combined with rouge-like sight-stuff. You can’t see anything beyond the current room unless you open doors, at which point the room beyond and all it’s nasties are showed to you. (Including a nifty progressive flood-fill effect).

I’ve managed to get my guy running around, all my level graphics, including decals, loading and displaying. All doors working, level switching working. My guy shoots (and leaves shells lying around too).

I took a small break and one point and managed to do a little industrial loop and some ambience, as well as a couple of sound effects. (I use Propellerhead’s Reason for all sound.)

Tomorrow I’ll start adding enemies - that’s when the fun really begins!

Oh I wonder what is behind this door.

Oh just another corridor.. But stairs too! Onward to the next floor!

I am behind!

I have a basic level editor, some tiles and a good idea of the direction my game is gonna go.

In the year something-or-other, a huge tower has been taken over by a hostile alien species. No one has been able to make any contact to anyone inside the building, and everyone sent in… Never comes out.

After 3 days of throwing lambs to the slaughter, the military decides to send you, a yippie-ki-yay-mofo, has been brought out of retirement to erradicate every alien in the tower. Floor one awaits.

The game is going to have a huge horde of aliens running around. Due to the ridiculous weapons I’m planning aliens wont just die - they’ll explode.

Anyone who has played the likes of Alien Breed and similar games will know what to expect.

Here’s my rudamentry editor -

Tower? :(!

Well yesterday I was all “welp, I don’t want to make one for Evolution”

So all night I was trying to work out an idea for it - and came up with something awesome!

Then I wake up and find out it’s tower? RAWRG

Oh well, I’m doing something anyway - here is desk.

Hey, well that was a great 48 hours, the first time I’ve actually seen Ludum Dare to the end and had something that I thought was pretty good.

The theme of chain reaction was not an overly easy one to come up with something original. I didn’t. Haha.

The gist is - When you shoot an enemy, the enemy explodes and breaks into pieces which kill other enemies and so on.

But there aren’t really enough enemies most of the time in the level for it to be obvious, and too many enemies and it becomes even more impossible than it already is.

Either way, here is the first level of Colon:F. I wanted to have more sound effects and have a boss by the end, but I didn’t get time. :( Oh well, I got most of what I wanted done. Not like you’d ever have got to the boss anyway.

Big player explosion with screen shaking and shockwave? CHECK!

Some custom made sound effects? CHECK!
