Ludum Dare 23

I finish my last class of the semester at noon Friday, and don’t have any exams until the following Thursday. Even if I needed to study I’d still have enough time to do it all.
As far as tools go I don’t know how to use Unity, so I’ll go with that. I always try to learn / try something new every challenge.
This will be my third LD started and hopefully second finished because the last time I started was my 18th birthday weekend so I didn’t have much time.
Good luck to all, I look forward to playing your entries.
My birthday is the 25th of August. I’ll be 18 and as per the family tradition I will be at a casino so I may not have time to finish something before the compo ends. I will try my best to get something done at the hotel and work until the final second when I get back. No guarantee that I can get something submitted but I will finish my game so I don’t feel left out.
This was my first time competing, and overall I’m happy with the outcome. I only ended up with four of the five levels in the game, and there are bugs and oddities in the game. The feedback I have received has been all somewhat positive, with suggestions saying to consider an external library, have some visual indicator of enemy health, you can fly on the second section of each level, etc. This screenshot also shows a few things I would’ve changed if I had more time or had planned more.
What went right
>> I did end up with something playable on Sunday, and I am working out some of the bugs and improving it in my free time
>> I had quite a fun time and this was a great experience.
What went wrong
>> Bugs, bugs, bugs… some more apparent than others, nothing that crashed but the flying thing was definitely a problem.
>> I never got audio working, that will be implemented on the fixed version and posted somewhere on the internets.
>> Some of the pixel graphics look weird because I am shit with graphics.
What I would do differently
>> Definitely acquaint myself with my tools beforehand. I was only using standard Java classes and Paint.NET for graphics.
>> Dedicate more time to it. I started a few hours late and didn’t stay up for the entire 48 hour time period.
>> Overall this was a good experience, and I will probably be doing something for the next one.
Going on the 12 hour mark and I have the engine almost complete, after that I’ll just need to build the levels and make it look good.
Just a quick question, did anyone else link Tiny World to “it’s a small world?” I don’t see any other posts relating to the song or ride.
This will be my first LD attempt, I don’t expect to produce anything amazing or even remotely good. But this should be an interesting experience and perhaps I will have something playable by Sunday. Good luck all.
