Ludum Dare 24 Weekend Ends. Time to Rate Games!

The Compo and Jam parts of Ludum Dare 24 have ended, but we’re not done yet!

Over the next 3 weeks, be sure to come back to play and rate games made by your peers. To be ranked, you need ratings! The best way to get more ratings is to play and rate games. Doing so improves your games visibility.

NOTE: Jam games, only the submitter gets to vote. Unfortunately, aside from sharing the account, we don’t have a way for the entire team to vote. Sorry. :(

Bugfixes

By now, you should not be touching your game code anymore (unless you’re making a post-compo version). That said, we do allow the following:

  1. Crashes – If your game dies at an important moment, you are allowed to fix this.
  2. Typo bugs – Little oops bugs, not features. Things you may have broke last minute.

Those are the only two types fixes you are allowed to make at this point. No New Features! If you want to add things, we call that a post-compo version. It’s your game, so you’re free to do whatever you want with it, but for the sake of judging we want you to preserve the version you submitted to the event.

Ports

Ports to different platforms are allowed after the deadline. You should get them in as soon as possible, and should be functionally the same as your submitted version. Porting to a mobile platform like Android may require adding on screen controls; This is allowed.

Remember: Web is the most popular platform. 2nd most popular is Windows. If you want to find Linux/other games, use the search box on the View All page.

Upcoming Events

Coming up next month (September), and every off month, members of the community run Mini-LD challenges. Check back in a couple weeks for that.

Coming up in October is a special event of ours the October Challenge. The October Challenge is where we encourage you take your first steps towards earning money from making games. For details, you can check last years event. Any companies interested in offering incentives can contact me (Mike Kasprzak) over here.

Finally, Ludum Dare 25 will be December 2012. Date to be announced as we get closer.

Thanks everyone, and lets go rate some games!

  1. What about adding in a mute button?

    • Frib says:

Haha, I feel your pain. My first LD game didn’t have a mute button, an annoying jump sound and VERY annoying non-stop playing loud music :D

I don’t know if it’s allowed to change (you are technically altering your game, not fixing a crash or typo) and I kept it as-is. But ever since then I’ve always added some sort of volume control to my games, just to avoid that post-compo realization that my audio is bad :D

      • Milo says:

I’ve often gotten comments about my music (and usually not positive ones). It’s never occurred to me that I might want to add a mute button in successive competitions. Although, this time around, I did decide to make relaxing music and people seem to like that more.

  2. mdkess says:

    Especially my game!

This was a ton of fun – thanks for organizing it. I’m really glad that I did it – it was the most fun that I’ve had in a long time. I honestly didn’t think that I had the willpower to finish, but somehow I managed to finish, and I’m actually pretty happy with the result (it’s a lot better than I expected, anyway). I’ll be back in December for the next one for sure.

  3. Ragzouken says:

Is enabling arrow keys for dvorak players when you already have WASD okay?

  4. Leebo86 says:

As I noted in my game’s description, I broke the AI in one of the modes right before I submitted. The AI in the gameplay mode is identical to the AI in the observation mode, I just removed a part by accident that caused the observation mode AI to not work. I can replace that so they’re identical again and upload the fixed version, correct?

  5. Zanzlanz says:

Is it okay if I improved the lag so more people can play? I have it saved as a link to a post-compo version, but I’d love to just replace the old version with the fixed one…
    Everything else remains the same.

  6. Puzzlem00n says:

Can’t wait for the October challenge! I’d assume this is an appropriate time to ask this: Do you need a business license to make money through flash, whether it be by sponsorship or ads? Because I’ve had that question in the back of my mind for a while.

  7. CdrJameson says:

    Heh.

Need to port my web version to ‘smaller screen’.
Just tried it on my laptop and I can only see two-thirds of the screen.

Fortunately I just need to change the HTML, not the game itself.

  8. [...] Plus d’infos sur le site officiel [...]

  9. pirate-rob says:

Is it legal to sell GM lite games? Also is it possible to sell GM games? and how?

(sorry for the amount of questions but it will be really useful)

    • mohammad says:

      its not illegal
if you read the help files for gamemaker, it says you can sell your games, if you read the lisences and agreements.
but thell probebly just get your game and make it for the iphone like a doosh or just put it on there website istead of letting you sell it as your own.

  10. mohammad says:

does the NO NEW FETURES also count for the jam?
and can changing a texture to somthing else count, or is that a new feture?

  11. jellonator says:

So does that mean I can fix a bug that would cause the player to get an achievement when he shouldn’t be?

  12. We reverted back to our original build. (thank goodness I established version control) I didn’t see this post until a few hours ago. Hopefully this doesn’t disqualify us :-\

  13. Rohit says:

I can’t make comments on some entries (the page just says “You must sign in to comment.”), even though I am signed in. How do I fix this?

  14. BrothersT says:

I’m kind of sketchy on the rules of the Jam (because they are kind of sketchy), but if someone has used content that wasn’t even made by them, let alone in the 72 hours, isn’t that kind of defeating the purpose of the competition?

I ask because I just found an entry using music by Kevin Macleod (makes a lot of royaly free music) and it feels like a bit of a middle finger to everyone whos actually put effort into the music, that they’ll get points for downloading a song. In my opinion it’s similar to ripping all of your art from an existing video game and using that (except less people are likely to call you on it).

I wish the Jam rules were stricter, I really enjoy it but I don’t think there’s any reason to have the rules so relaxed. We personally work up until the deadline and create everything in 72 hours because it’s more fun to us (You can tell from our first submission – it barely works). I don’t think the fact that some teams have more people would make a difference with stricter rules either, smaller teams will just make different games, it’s not like they wouldn’t be able to compete.

Do many people share this point of view I wonder?

    • QualityAssurance says:

I feel the opposite. There is a Compo and a Jam portion of the Ludum. The Compo is the competitive part, and thus has stricter rules. If you want your game to be compared to other games with all original content, then the Compo is a perfect place.

The Jam however, is more along the lines of “Get it done.” How ever you see fit. Sometimes people are making their first game, and thus don’t have the knowledge or tools to create all original content. They rely on their team and the internet to fill in the gaps. It’s more collaborative.

Now, I can see there is voting for Jam games, which i feel should be handled separately. So that may be causing confusion.

PS For the sake of revealing bias, my team used chiptunes that had non-commercial creative licenses. So in your opinion, I put a middle finger to a large group of people.

      • BrothersT says:

@QualityAssurance – Fair enough :) You make some good points, especially about people starting out, there should be a place for everyone in the competition. I’d still love to see a contest for teams, however long, that was more about creating 100% of the content in the time provided, but maybe I’m alone there.

I don’t really feel like you’re giving a middle finger to everyone, because there’s no rules against it and I’m sure you weren’t trying to cut corners, I just wanted to get people’s opinions, and it seems as though using royalty free content is completely accepted. In that case I’ve just had the wrong impression of what the Jam is about. Cheers!

      • mohammad says:

The Ludum was never one composition.
Its either the Jam or the Compo.

    • Codexus says:

The Compo is the original Ludum Dare idea: a solo, 48h, do it all yourself competition. The Jam was created “for everything else” that didn’t fit the rules, teams but also pre-existing content and more time.

This time I entered the Jam simply because my game was not finished in 48h. I still made it solo and made everything myself.

When the Jam was created it didn’t have ratings, I think the reason they were added was because otherwise the Jam games didn’t get much feedback and were pretty much ignored during the voting. But I think the jam ratings are less meaningful because it’s possible that some of the content was not created during the jam.

So for example, if an entry uses a really royalty free track of music should I give it a lower audio score? But even if I thought that was a good idea, how can I be sure? It’s not required to tell people. So I would just be giving a low score to people who are being transparent about the resources they used while those who stay silent would get rewarded. Not a good idea.

So I judge only the result. Even if the awesome music is by Kevin MacLeod then I have no choice to give the jam entry a good score for it.

      • BrothersT says:

Yeah that’s what I’m having trouble getting my head around I think, that Jam entries might be treated as lesser achievements because the rules are looser, even if we adhered to the contest rules of creating *everything* in the time provided. I would love a strict set of rules so that I could see how me and my brother really fare against the top teams out there.

        • Codexus says:

What really matters is that you created a game. The results don’t really matter. Of course, I’d love to win someday and I’m always terribly disappointed when my games don’t do as well in the results as I had hoped they would. But what matters is what I accomplished. And I’m proud to have made my musics myself rather than using something from the web.

  15. mohammad says:

    What’s wrong poV?
Too good to make a game for the Ludum?
    ;)

  16. mohammad says:

    Yo, poV.
    The new wordpress is out.
    Just lettin you know.

  17. mohammad says:

Baseball Announcer: And the Ludum is…OVER!
Can we get the winners soon?
