   You can embed by just posting the youtube url in the format http://youtu.be/. You don’t need to make it a link or anything, just plain text. WordPress will automatically take that video and embed it.

     Yeah, I figured it out thanks to Pov.

     My problem was I was using the WYSIWYG editor (by default), and pasting links into it automatically added the html <a href="…". This caused the link not to be recognized by the automatic embedding system.
