August 12th, 2011 6:52 amHey all- I’ve been following LD for about a year now but have yet to enter any of the compos. I’m pretty psyched about LD21. I’m British and live in London, so I’m going to have to get up EARLY in the morning.
For anyone that hasn’t decided on a language or platform- I was recently made aware of an entirely in-browser game IDE www.playmycode.com based on a modified version of the Ruby language. They host your game for free and it’ll run in any modern browser that supports HTML5. You can embed your finished game just like a youtube video.
I’m a C++ / OpenGL guy myself, but have done a fair amount of PHP so am hoping I can pick it up pretty quick. There’s plenty of documentation on their site as well.
A good friend of mine, also from London, is also entering LD21- I’d give him a shout out but he hasn’t registered yet. Good luck all !!
EDIT: if you’re going to have a play with that playmycode shiz, make sure you read their T&Cs http://www.playmycode.com/docs/terms/ – they offer a good service at a price. Usual stuff -> “You retain the rights to your content but we retain the rights to sell your kidneys on the blackmarket”
Hello, and welcome to LD, the *getting air in lungs* most-hyped-masochistic-adrenalin-packed-crazy-fest-of-doom-where-you-are-challenged-with-the-goal-to-make-a-game-in-as-few-as-48-hours-or-you-will-die-in-a-fire-and-continue-your-burning-in-hell!
Also: Interesting link you posted there, even though I’ve never used Ruby or anything similar, I’m gonna look at it! I just looked into the ”Sandbox” mode, you get when you’re not logged in. The syntax looks easy to understand, the interface seems pretty solid for a beta and the web function is an additional plus
So, yeah, I wish good luck to you, and your unknown friend.

Good luck with your first participation !
Just want to point out: I’m in Europe too (Belgium), so the compo also starts in the night for me. Getting up early is good, but don’t overdo it. Usually I go to bed early, then set an alarm to check the theme, and then go back to sleep for some hours. I found that keeping a “normal” cycle boosted my productivity.
But to each his own, I suppose !
Hi Fazz,
Good luck
I’m from Germany and last time (My first time) I couldn’t sleep until it was 3am in the morning so I checked the theme, went to bed and continued to “not sleep at all” there
Also it’s interesting to work until 3am Monday morning if you’ve got job. This time I took a day off, so that doesn’t hurt that much …
Thanks for the tips guys- I’m pretty rubbish with no sleep so I’ll be taking Grungi’s advice!
Oh incidentally, if you are going to have a look at the playmycode thing, make sure you check out their T&Cs http://www.playmycode.com/docs/terms/ as you won’t have much control over your content. They offer a good service at a price.
Take care
Hi Fazz,
I’m very happy you liked our site, and I would welcome anyone interested in using it. But I’d like to clarify our T&C’s a little. Everything you upload, including details, images, audio and source code, is 100% owned by you! We do not own it, and we cannot sell it.
You can also take down your content, at any time.
I hope that helps!
Joe.
I am the unknown friend Fazz refers to. Hello! It’s also my first time *gulp*.
Unlike Fazz I am not a programmer at all and my previous experience boils down to making a few silly games in Klik & Play about 10 years ago when I was a teenager. So this should be interesting… I’m probably gonna use Scirra Construct Classic and muddle my way through.
Oh, hi there!
It’s no problem to “not be a programmer”.
I had that problem too. I started out with LD #18, with no experience whatsoever. Now I’m trying to finish up a game with Game Maker, which isn’t actually a ”high level” language
btw. I’m 14. So, if I was able to achieve something, you will be able too. Just don’t give up!
Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll try not to!
