MiniLD #24 Scheming
Hey, I’m back for more after vanishing for a while due to crunch time at my day job.
My current plan for MiniLD #24 is a jump ‘em up similar to Cannabalt but with the player simultaneously controlling two or three with slightly differing abilities. It might turn out horribly tricky but at least then it will satisfy the “Game must end in 60 seconds” naturally.
I will be using the sprite engine I made for LD #18, with a few bits bolted on (support for sound). It can be found on github.
There will be 2 or 3 playable characters because I haven’t decided if the third character will be playable yet. It will either be running to escape like the others or the game will be set in its gut. More on that later.
Theme: Will be one of true love, tainted love and Tetris is now a game.
Limitations: 2 colours, 1 button only (per character, will be 2 or 3 total).
Rules: Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.
Badum tsch
Friday, February 11th, 2011 11:05 amSeriously? I just wrote “Badum tsch” in the title? GEDDIT?! (of course not)
So anyway yes I am going to participate in Mini LD number 24 or whatever oh well I think I got it right this time (unusual) and yes my full stop key is broken.
I don’t yet know which theme(s) I am going to pick, but certainly it won’t include love (neither one). The limitations are kinda harder to choose from… I was thinking about the audio and 2 colours thing… Finally – for the rules, I think I am gonna use this one to start with Java (yeah, Eclipse already installed
)…
I will start tomorrow, even though it is a Mini LD. Edit: oh whatever I just started beacuase (damn I am good) I’ve got some nice ideas.
Post scriptum: I am happy with Niribu X – even though it was not complete at all when I submitted it, I got some nice feedback (thank you) – so I will finish this sometime when I want a break from my major project.
Just a game I made
After the ludum dare 19 competition I made a nice game I called “Galaxy Conquest”, so if you interested try it here. Leave comments if you like it, or not, thanks.
MiniLD 24 Progress: EPIC REPORT!
Hey everyone!
Since this is a mini with loose rules, I’ve decided to pretty much ignore them altogether! The only limitation it’s following is “one button only” (the mouse), but it follows my own theme of “making something totally boring into an interesting game.” I’m also spreading the work out over this week, but finishing in less than 48 hours of work time.
My game is about writing a final report on a subject in just a few minutes. It’s my first action/arcade game for a while- the gameplay involves catching falling letters to bring them to the paper. If you miss letters, the words on the report will be misspelled. If the player collects enough letters and powerups while avoiding typos, they’ll get a good grade!
Each report has a topic, which determines the environment and the way the letters appear and move.
Here’s a screenshot of the report “The Internet”:

Newcomer to MiniLD #24
Hello. I’m a long-time follower, new participant to Ludum Dare. I’ll be participating in MiniLD #24, testing my might against lower-level opponents, so to speak. If I manage to finish this well enough (considering I’m looking at pretty unfavorable conditions), I might try my hand at a regular competition.
I’ve been rolling around a few ideas in my head around the limitations, and I’ve ended up with something that I might be able to make, though it won’t be extraordinary, since I’m not that into the idea myself. If any other idea strikes me until I begin proper, I’ll do that, of course, but as of right now, I’ll be using..
Themes:
- None so far, might see. The only way I might be able to squeeze one in is via plot, which isn’t as much as I’d hoped for.
Limitations:
- Two colors (possibly, if I can work the graphical style in.)
- Framerate cap at 5fps (this of course would probably only include graphics, which means it’d be a feature of the graphical style.)
Rules:
- Use a tool you’ve never used before. (Pygame)
I haven’t settled on a name yet, nor much of anything yet (hence the vague outline of the game), and I’m doing this Waterfall-style. I’ll be making features, then finding explanations or ingame justifications for them, and hopefully I’ll end up with something.
I’ll also try to make a timelapse of both my desktop and my webcam, though the latter is questionable. I’ll hang out in IRC, and we’ll see how things go.
Here we go, wish me luck.
Bad News for Ctrl-Z
The palindromes everywhere in my code are seriously messing me up ):
I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish like this, so I think I might just write the game for real (with a real definition naming standard) later. Unfortunately that means I most likely won’t be submitting Ctrl-Z to the compo, but at least I got something out of this: the idea. The theme got me thinking, and I came up with a solid (I think) idea, which I hope to finish soon. Everything in my life has been impeding my progress, as miniLD #24 seems to have fallen on the busiest week and weekend in the last year, if not more, so I will back out of this one for the sake of my growing sleep debt and my shrinking sanity. I will definitely be competing again during a somewhat less busy week.
It really sucks to quit on my first try, but there’s just too much going on. Anyway, I’m not giving up on the game, but only on the deadline, so I figure that its not too much of a bad start.
So until next LD

A Change of Mini-LD Plans – A Different Game
I fiddled around with BulletML this afternoon, and it turned out to be quite the hassle to parse. Not actually that fun for me to use, since there doesn’t seem to be a good BulletML library for AS3. I also came across a very, very nifty level editor that looks like it will make me very happy.
I’ve decided to use the following themes:
Theme: Alternate universe spin-off (Dragon Warrior)
Limitation: Not using one, sorry. It’s a Mini, and I don’t like these restrictions.
Rule: Use software you’ve never used before (DAME level editor (Never used at all) and Gimp (Never used in a completed game)
With a theme and a rule used twice, I think it’s a good enough use of the “Pick’n'Mix” theme.
My premise is a spinoff of Dragon Warrior set in the distant future. There are aliens about, some friendly, some monsters. The big bad is an evil robot, and the good guys are a rag-tag bunch of futuristic warriors out to Save The World.
I hope to have a substantial amount done by the end of the Mini-LD submission time. It’ll take a while, but the Mini will give me good motivation to work on it.
I may start on it tonight, which is stretching the Mini’s time line a bit.
Peace
— Mr. Dude
GJJ’11: Cure
Hola, just wanted to show you our result of the global game jam (cologne) to the theme ‘extinction’.
The game is called ‘Cure’ and your task is to kill viruses and bacteria inside your body.
We used Unity3d to create this 2D game. Have a look and very much fun at the upcoming miniLD.
Time Lapse!
I just finished uploading a time lapse of me working on Ctrl-Z, and here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XBv0cGrkEs
I didn’t get much done in the time, but at least I made a time lapse! More on my progress later (probably tomorrow).

MiniLD 24 game idea – “Ctrl-Z”
OK, I have spent the subway ride to/from school, and some time during school figuring out my idea, and I have the main mechanic down. I’ll explain in a second, but first here are my rules/limitations/themes:
I will only be doing one of the rules, and that is making all my definitions palindromes. I will be limiting myself to a 5fps frame rate, and depending on how I decide to set up the controls, I might have a 1 or 2 button input. The theme isn’t so cut and dry; I will be making a tetris based game but it will still be a puzzle, so I will only count that as half a theme. The game will also implement a “playing backwards” theme, which I will count as half being the “inside out” theme.
I will be calling my game Ctrl-Z, and the mechanic is that the player gets to play tetris backwards. He/she will select 4 touching tiles from the “ground” as being the last played piece, and then the computer will “un-play” the resulting piece. In this way, the player goes backwards in time controlling not the motion of the pieces, but the destination. Obviously, I intend to include a couple of more engaging elements, such as limitations on your choice of pieces and appearing lines (as opposed to disappearing lines such as in tetris when you fill the line in question).
I mostly know what I’m doing, but I have a couple of things to still figure out (mainly control scheme, and algorithm for extracting pieces).
And now to work! I’ll update again when something gets done.

Couches and how they involve criminals.
I’m entering early for this MLD because I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish it in 48hrs. I’ll be using Python and Pygame for the graphics and game logic.
That said, I’ve already got a good idea of what my game, CouchJumper, is about.
You get to be a couch thief who robs furniture stores, trying to collect all the couches in the world.
My limitations are:
1 button input only, all audio must be your own voice
and my theme, tainted love.
Right now I’ve got a pretty good one-button menu. It doesn’t look like much, but I think this will be a very fun game.
A Mr. Dude Flip-Flop – My “For Real This Time” Mini-LD Entry
Foxy Ninja is taking longer than I thought it would, partly because of how much of last weekend I wasted. So… I’ve decided that I will flip-flop about my Mini-LD entry, as I so often do. (Though this time it’s well before the start of the Mini-LD proper, for what that counts for)
I’ve got another idea, though. I want to make a bullet hell shmup.
I’m using the “Pick’n'Mix” theme as follows:
Theme: Alternate universe spinoff (Street Fighter – Requires explanation)
Restriction: 2-Button Input (Mouse motion + Mouse click)
Rule: Use software you’ve never used before (BulletML)
Yeah, Street Fighter. It takes place in the year 2287, and is about pilots of heavily-armed fighter ships taking on the evil Admiral Bison as he tries to take over the solar system. I will pick a handful of Street Fighter characters, give them each a ship with a few different weapons, stick some upgrades in, and we’re off and running!
I will make the game in AS3 using FlashPunk. Good times. I will probably use Gimp for graphics, but may fall back on Inkscape. Oh, and I’ll be using BulletML, too. Can’t forget that, can we?
I might have some extra work for my economics class this weekend, depending on how much work my group decides to put into the proposal for our group project. (Weird semester-long group project, likely to be a hassle) Because of that, I’m going the time between Thursday night and Monday night to work on my game. Yes, 96h for a 48h compo. It’s just a Mini, after all.
I might work on Foxy Ninja some more tonight, and will probably go through with finishing it, but it just didn’t happen last weekend. If anyone’s interested, I can post a demo of what I have some time tomorrow.
Peace, love, and good gaming

New to LD and starting with miniLD 24
Hello everyone!
I just joined LD, and am going to be doing miniLD 24. I will mainly be using flash for this, and am going to allow myself until the end of Thursday to do this one. I know that’s not 48 hours, but I won’t have much time today/tomorrow, so I don’t want to make it be by Wednesday (like 48 hours would have been), and I already saw the theme so I can’t even kid myself that I’m not already subconsciously/consciously planning. So instead, I have 3 school days (can’t work on this most of THAT time) and this night to complete my game. I think thats fair.
I don’t know what I will call my game yet, and I haven’t even chosen themes, rules, and limitations, but I still have time. I will be posting about my progress, scanning in scrap-work and planning pages, trying to get a time lapse video going, and in general keep everything updated.

Next MiniLD: sirtet3(60)
MiniLD 24 is technically this weekend, but I’m going to being prepping early. Since we get to pick and choose rules this time, I’m picking non-puzzle Tetris game, game must end in 60 seconds, and all game code must be completed in three hours or less. I’m also planning on using the unbelieveably-original name Sirtet3(60).
As for the actual game itself, I’m still brainstorming, but I’m leaning towards something to do with the garbage blocks or the Catch mode found in Tetris DS.
LD 48 – Alien Super Mega Blaster – On Sale Now for Charity
All those months ago I created a litlle game called Alien Super Mega Blaster as part of LD18 – Enemies as Weapons.
Early today it passed the final peer review and is now available for purchase on the Xbox Live Indie Games channel here:
All the proceeds I receive from the game will be donated to Action Duchenne, a charity established to find a cure or more effective medicines to treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
In the months between the compo and yesterday I’ve added sound and music, new alien types and over 100 hand crafted levels of blasting fun.
If there anything the Ludum Dare community can do to increase awareness of the game and help find a cure it will be very much appreciated.
Some details on the game:
“Alien Super Mega Blaster is a classic space invaders game with a twist available for the Xbox 360.
Kill the aliens and avoid the fallout. Maximize your score with mega cascading death to the alien scrum.
Over 100 hand crafted levels of blasting fun… how far can you go?
All proceeds from this game will be donated to Action Duchenne.”
You can find out more about the game here: http://asmb.codheadz.com
You can purchase the game here: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Alien-Super-Mega-Blaster/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802585507aa

Hello, a little help is needed!
Hey there!
While I’m not doing anything with LD at the moment, I am going to particpate in April. However, there has been some issues with internet usage and I am a little worried. I was wondering if any LDers had any advice/products to reccommend lower/slow/monitor/meter internet use.
Thanks in advance!

Foxy Ninja – Plans for Day 2
It’s the second day of my early Mini-LD entry, and I’ve got some plans now that I’ve got my base engine in place.
Today I plan to get four types of floor working:
- Pits
- Spikes
- Lasers (Oh yes, lasers in a ninja game)
- Flames
If I can do that, I’m happy.
Peace

Mini-LD #24 – Entering Early, and Somewhat Retroactively
I’ve decided to enter the Mini-LD early. I have a game that I want to make for it, though it would likely ignore the theme. (Sophie hasn’t posted the theme yet, so I don’t know whether it follow or not. I can BS the theme, though)
I started working on it this morning, but have just now decided that it is my Mini-LD game. I’m stretching the rules quite a bit here, though. I want to give myself until Monday morning to make it. (“Monday morning” meaning 6 AM EST on the 7th)
It is a one-button game inspired by One Button Bob and Nano Ninja. It is titled “Foxy Ninja” and is about a ninja named Lola fighting her way up warlords’ palace towers to assassinate them. On each floor, the game’s one button (Either space, C, or the left mouse button) will perform an action specific to that floor’s obstacle. There will be pits to jump over, baddies to fight, and lots of other ninja action, all with just one button!
Here’s hoping…
— Mr. Dude
(As a note: I’m perfectly willing to spend time after Monday morning to work on this, but I will save what I have at that point as the Mini-LD version)
