Halifax 1917 is back!

Hi folks,

Here’s the latest build of the game :

http://kapokmedia.com/halifax1917/2011_02_26/

It is a test level, for development purposes. No fire in this version, no time limit. But there is a usable ladder, water depletion, a water bottle pickup, and a destructible DOOR!

Currently I didn’t add an axe to the player, but you can mimic hitting the door by pressing SPACE. You can do this from anywhere on the stage… will be fixed soon :)

CouchJumper stopped, but I made another game…

I found some game-breaking glitches in CouchJumper, and as I don’t have enough time to rewrite the physics code for the 8th time, I just hacked together a small game called Climber. (Yes, I know this is 13 days after the MiniLD ended)

You’re a small square that needs to survive the onslaught of fishy things. Use just the arrow keys.

And as I don’t seem to be able to submit this to the MiniLD page anymore, here’s a download link:

http://www.weebly.com/uploads/3/6/7/0/3670719/climber.py

You’ll need Python 2.7, and Pygame 1.9.1. You can get them at python and pygame.org, respectively.

Roller Derby 20XX – Post Compo Release

Posted by
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 11:09 am

Roller-Derby 20XX: Mega Islands of Awesome (my April 2010 Ludum Dare entry) has been rebuilt from the ground up, sponsored and released under a shorter title “Roller Derby 20XX”.

Play via Kongregate (English Leaderboards)
Play via MiniJuegos (Primary Sponsor) in “HD”

I always intended to revisit this game post-compo but it took many months before I actually did anything about it. The talented musical stylings of Amon26 and exquisite pixel-artistry of Paul Veer made the game come to life. As for me, I rewrote a lot of the code and tweaked the controls significantly from the original release.

Actually going through the process of releasing a game, finding sponsorship and distribution was hugely rewarding. I learned so much that will put me in a stronger position if I decide to do another sponsored Flash game. Financially, Roller Derby 20XX was a break-even proposition. I was able to pay the artists and FGL’s 10% cut. Which is fine. The experience was far more valuable to me than any monetary gains.

Ludum Dare has been a life-changer for me. I don’t have much free time and I’m not disciplined enough to spend an hour or two on game development every day. But I can free up a weekend and know that I will have something prototyped after 48hrs. Sometimes these prototypes are worth expanding on.

I recommend to anyone: take one of your compo entries, polish it up and throw it up on Flash Game License. Just experience what it’s like to go through that process.

Total investment in Roller Derby 20XX: About 150 hours. Value gained from the experience? Priceless.

Entry cancelled (but the game isn’t)

What with school and some other things that have popped up recently, I (for the second month in a row) did not finish my MiniLD entry. However, I am a HUGE fan of the concept I came up with! Sometime down the road, I will complete this project and remove all references to Tetris so I can legally release it. :]

Seven-Day Roguelike Contest 2011

Posted by
Saturday, February 19th, 2011 6:24 pm

Every year, there’s a challenge to make a fully-functioning, playable roguelike game in seven days. For more information about this year’s Seven-Day Roguelike (7DRL) Challenge, you can check out “7DRL Contest 2011” at RogueBasin. There’s also a Facebook event for participants!

The 7DRL Contest isn’t organisationally related to Ludum Dare in any way, but seeing as there are many people here who are willing to subject themselves to suffering make games within absurd time limits, I thought it might be worth the advertisement. ;-)

Ludum Dare Meetup in SF on March 1st!

Posted by (twitter: @philhassey)
Thursday, February 17th, 2011 7:33 pm

Hey,

The Ludum Dare Meetup in SF is going to happen!

When: Tuesday, March 1st, 5:30pm
Where: The Food Emporium in the Westfield San Francisco Centre – take the escalator down to the bottom floor of the mall.
Finding Us: We will be directly to the right of the bottom of the escalator. Some of us will have LD T-shirts, and it’s going to be awesome. We’ll eat exquisite food and have polite conversation.

We’re going to all get a plate of food and hang out and eat for an hour or so. It should be a good time! Be sure to wear your Ludum Dare T-Shirt so we can get a swell group photo :)

Also, a few people mentioned wanting to organize some other crazy activities for during GDC. You should post a comment with what your ideas are! I’m sure some of us would love to have even more fun at GDC than we’re already planning on having!

Cheers!
-Phil

CouchJumper almost done!

Yep! All it needs are a few more levels, some better art for the main character, and high-scores. I’ve taken out the ability to change direction, as it was interfering with the rest of the game. You can turn around only when you hit a wall. I’ve also added the ability to wall-jump.

November ’11 Mini-LD

I would like to reserve a Mini-LD in November. I added myself to the wiki, but I know its currently being mutilated by those nasty spam-bots. It was empty on the wiki, but I wanted to post here to ensure I get it. I am hosting a local Phoenix game jam in November, and would like to spread that love into the LD community.

First HTML5 / Javascript Game

Posted by
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 9:31 am

Been messing around a lot with HTML5 / Javascript last month. So MiniLD #24 was the perfect time to test it out. Ended up making a small artsy game with a friend, pretty pleased with the result:

http://ippa.se/webgames/unwaivering/ – A small game about true love

(Will take about 2-3 minutes to play through)

Gonna start soon!

Posted by
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 8:11 am

It’s already almost 4 days since miniLD #24 started, and I didn’t started yet but I’ve already got an idea and gonna start soon.

So here is my rules and limitation:
Theme: Fishing
4 Limitations: 2 colours + Game must end in 60 seconds +
All audio must be your own voice + Framerate cap at 5fps
3 Rules: All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes +
Use a tool/language you have never used before + Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

I think I’m gonna make a simple short game, about fishing and mixing stuff. I still haven’t choose the tool/language I’m gonna use, probably Flash or Unity.

After a Wasted Weekend – A Promise for a Game

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)

I… Spent most of the weekend playing games. I did not wind up making a game. I’m sorry about that. :(

I promise that I will be making a game this week, hopefully before submissions close.

I’m probably going to be making a tower defense game. It’ll be fairly simple, but hopefully fairly fun. I haven’t decided much about it, though.

Edit: I may actually be making a bullet hell shmup instead. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not sure yet.

That being said, I hope to have a demo fairly soon.

Here’s hoping…
