Post LD23 : Halifax 1917, todo list
As I have said last week, I have decided to finish this game, and I will probably submit it to Kongregate or some other flash game portal.
I have set up a public todo list on toodledo.com, so we can monitor what is done and what is left to do.
If you find bugs, if you have features that you’d like implemented, go ahead and add them here! I’ll add them to the todo list if they make sense
Timecrawl is done
I finished my Ludum Dare mini-LD #23 game. It’s available for play on Kongregate!
Click on the pic to play, or go here to the Kongregate page.
I had fun putting this game together. It plays a lot different from the version I showed people shortly after the contest is over. Things are a bit more faster paced.
Anyway, enjoy.
Remember AfterDark?
Well, i finally got around to updating it to v2!

Brute Force – Initial Progress, Goals, and Adjusting the Deadline
I’ve gotten some very, very basic work done for Brute Force.
I currently have the player’s tank, which rolls around on the screen and with a turret that turns toward the mouse.
The player’s tank is made up of a body, a turret, and some kind of propulsion (Generally but not always tank treads), each with some basic stats.
The game uses a custom event class to handle input events by name. (IE: “Left”, “Fire Primary”, or “Pause” instead of keyCode’s) I did take the Key class from FlashPunk (Which contains constants for keys by name), which made my job much easier.
The next thing I will put in is some kind of weapon. After that, equipment will be loaded from data files. Then, other things.
This should turn out to be a fun game.
Peace

It’s official!
Friday, January 28th, 2011 12:06 pmShameless Self Publicity Time!
Hello LD
I just wanted to spend a moment to shamelessly ask you to try out one of my first finished projects, a small game named FatCat:

It’s free and it’s made by myself and a few artist friends, so check it out if you have time and give me some feedback! I would love to hear some opinions on it

Cancer Wars v0.2 beta
Cancer Wars is a cartoon style futuristic arena cure-em-up…
Made with Unity 3d.

A Personal Challenge – Brute Force
I’ve decided to take a break from working on Luna. It’s at a place where I’ve still got some interesting work to do and can probably pick it back up if I shelve it for a while.
So I’ve decided to try another relatively small exercise. I’m going to make a tank shooter.
I’m giving myself until 6AM (EST) on the 31st of this month to complete it. That is, I’m giving myself four days.
The game will be a fairly typical tank shooter with procedural levels. The baddies will also be assembled semi-procedurally. (As in: Hand-made parts assembled procedurally) The player’s tank will also be customizable.
Here’s hoping…

Global Game Jam
Hey, LDers — the 3rd annual Global Game Jam is this weekend, and I thought it’d be pretty nifty to see who else is participating. GGJ is a 48-hour (weekend) jam, so I know you can handle it; the big difference is that it’s team-based, not solo. Pack up your machine, head over to <insert nearest major city here>, form a team, and write something awesome. You know the drill.
I’ll be at the Scottish Jam, in Glasgow. How about you?
Remember Spacenoid from LD18? Well…

Either you do not, I did a Flash version! It’s now called Arkanaut (to avoid confusion with other stuff called Spacenoid) and it’s avaiable on Kongregate: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Supermini_man/arkanaut
If you’ve an account there you can also submit scores. Thank you LD to have begin what is today Arkanaut.
Luna – Progress Update
I’ve made yet more progress on Luna. I’ve got the mid-way boss completed, and I’ve also got the fifth level done. (Fifth counting the mid-way boss’ “level”)
I’m working on the sixth level right now, and hopefully will have all of the levels and the final boss done by some time Friday. After that, I will finish the hud (With score display, lives, and boss health), make the title screen, and do other nice things that will make the game nice and spiffy.
Edit: I have uploaded what I have so far to my Dropbox. I don’t have a screenie for it, but that’s what I have.
Overall, life is good. A lot of progress has been made, and things are going very well.
I might actually finish a game for a change. That’s exciting.
Peace

My try – LD logo contest
Not a winner, judging by the already submitted images, but since it’s done, I’ll post it here.
Mini LD 23: Postmortem
tl;dr version:
We didn’t finish the project but we had a hell of a good time and will definitely be participating in future Ludum Dares. What follows is a list of useful things we found / were reminded of. If you’re interested in reading the rest of the blog (including what game we attempted to make and general feedback from our experience), hit the break.
* GraphicsGale / Allegro Sprite Editor (heheh)
* sfxr (how have I lived without this?!?)
* Pauls Online Math Notes (reexplained vector manipulation better than the other results I found)

MiniLD #24 – Pick ‘n’ Mix!
Weekend of the 14th of February, starting at the usual time.
…and by that, I mean the weekend before, so that’s 12th-13th, so the real start time is:
4am, Saturday February 12th UTC — 9pm Friday Feburary 11th EST/6pm PST
MiniLD #24 starts 466 days, 15 hours, 28 minutes, 12 seconds ago
of course you’re welcome to enter whenever you like, I’m not strict with mini times <3
Going to announce the ‘theme’ early since it’s a mini, I’m relaxed with rules and time so do what you like.
Theme: Pick ‘n’ Mix
here’s how it’s going to work, I have lists of themes, limitations and rules. pick one (or more) of each and go!
Themes:
- True Love
- Tainted Love
- Inside-out
- Alternate universe spinoff of a major franchise
- Tetris is now a <genre other than puzzle> game!
- Fishing
Limitations:
- 2 button input only
- 1 button input only
- 2 colours
- Game must end in 60 seconds
- All audio must be your own voice
- Framerate cap at 5fps
Rules:
- All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes
- Work with a partner
- Use a tool/language you have never used before
- Wear something absurd whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to youtube when done.
- Wear nothing whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to amateur porn site when done.
- Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.
there you go, pick one or more from each section, or do your own thing, it’s only a mini after all.
regarding times, make the game across whatever 48 hour(ish) period you like, spend more than 48 hours or spend less, I don’t care. submissions will be open for probably about a week after the weekend noted above, but if you want to dev alongside others, make your game over that weekend
THAT IS ALL!
edit: >>>>> Submit your games here! <<<<<
Luna – Progress Update
I’ve made some progress with Luna.
I have the third level done, and am working on the mid-way boss. I’ve decided that because it would be really trick to make a boss arena within a normal level, bosses get their own “boss levels” which are little stages that only consist of a boss fight.
The next demo will feature the three levels that I currently have, plus the mid-way boss. I hope to have it some time before 6AM (EST) tomorrow.
Peace

SPRINGBOT 3011
Well, it’s very late for the Mini-LD but I only started on it yesterday and now it’s a game, so there’s something.

I used Arne’s 16 Colour palette and a 4×4 tile grid, and went from there.
I’ll build a page for it tomorrow, and likely polish it quite a bit more, but you can play it here: http://www.1bardesign.com/experiments/springbots.swf
For the time I’ve put in I’m very happy with it.
Instructions:
- Go right
- Collect Stuff
- Don’t run out of bounce
- R to reset
Have fun, comments appreciated.
Deadlines… Pfff…
I know that I was aiming to have Luna done by now. Here’s what happened: Last night, I looked up at my clock, realized that I only had 8 hours left, and it quickly dawned on me that it was more or less hopeless. Then, a couple of hours later, I inadvertently fell asleep. Sigh.
Here’s where the deadline stands: There isn’t one. I’m going to be honest with myself in that I know I’ll keep pushing it back more and more pretty much until it’s done. So no more deadline. It’ll be done when it’s done.
Here’s what I have left to make:
- Bosses (Both mid-way and final)
- Lives system
- Score and lives displays in the hud
- Levels 3-5 (3 is in progress, though)
- Title screen
- Game over screen
- Level end splash
- Music
That’s a lot, but I think I might actually finish this. I know that doesn’t mean much. I haven’t gotten this far on a project for quite some time, though, and that’s very exciting.
Peace

Quench: Ludum Dare mini #23
Well, this is my “entry” for Ludum Dare mini hosted by JohnnyD. (Thanks!)
Since it’s not obvious, let me explain: You are a time traveler from the far future. Unfortunately, in the future, booze has been eliminated as an unnecessary vice from society. Desperate for something to wet your whistle, you use the company’s time machine to bar hop in an inconspicuous manner.
So you travel back to 1925, where Prohibition is in the full swing and it’s expected to find shady characters who don’t like to share their past visiting the local secret speak-easy. It also makes it harder for the time cops to sniff out where you’ve been.
Sadly, you have no money, only what pittance salary you can get from the Time Institute as part of your job. Fortunately, casual telekinetic powers are common in the future, so you can nick drinks away to soothe your frazzled nerves.
tl;dr: Use the hand cursor and mouse button to pick up drinks with your telekinetic powers and deliver them to your table. Be careful, as jostling the drinks will spill alcohol. Don’t let your sobriety meter fill up, or it’s game over*.
(*Or not, as this was never implemented.)
How does the spring physics enter into the game? Well, when you pick up the beers, they are suspended from your floaty mental hand by a simple spring.
1871 – The Big Fire (that will not burn)
Ok, I won’t finish! I’m quite satisfied with what I got so far. I have regions in that you die like fire/water, etc. After death you are respawned at the last savepoint. There are different regions your spring jumps different (red=higher). I implemented a mobile phone joystick that I’m quite happy with. I think I will finish a demo tomorrow and put it in a folder marked with “nice try”!
Here what I got:
