Whew, it’s done.

Right up to the wire too. I didn’t get a chance to implement a system where you can lose, but right now there’s four playable levels, scoring, an end game, etc. So, I am pretty happy with having done this in two days. No base code at all – from scratch except I used TweenLite in a couple of spots.

Now I need some food, some sleep, and some wine.

Ludum Dare 19 Compo ends

The competition portion of Ludum Dare 19 has come to a close. Once the clock hits zero, you have one hour to submit your game for inclusion in the Compo. After that, all new games are added to the Jam.

[ Rate Games | View All | Submit a Jam Game ]

Judging has begun! If you are a Mac or Linux developer, it’s recommended you make a Windows version available as soon as possible. Go here to add additional builds to your entry.

Thanks everyone for coming out and making Ludum Dare 19 such a big success.

Jammers, get back to work! :)

Defeat!

Posted by
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 6:26 pm

Well, guess its time to admit defeat, the collision is more or less where I want it, but theres no gameplay at all(other then being able to run and jump).

At least I know next time not to try to learn new libraries during a time limited schedule, deciding to use Phys2D was a big mistake, and sticking to my guns about using it rather then chucking it away after realizing how much time I was wasting just to get it running was an even bigger mistake, but at least I know quite a bit about the Phys2D library now, and know more about Slick2D, so I can’t say this has all been a wasted effort.

Either way, I will see if I can still get it done for the jam, but I wont be submitting it now as the player sprite wasn’t created by me, was just a sprite test to see how things were looking with Slick2Ds SpriteSheet and Animation classes(which I discovered even existed more then half way through the first day).

Note: The game requires that version 4 of the .NET Framework is installed on your computer. You can download it from here:

Overall, it was a very fun experience building a game in 48 hours :D

I’ll write a post-mortem in the next day or so, and I’ll also upload my chronolapse video either later on today or tomorrow (Waiting for 12:30 (AEST) to come around, before I start to edit it). I’ll also attempt to port the code over to Linux as well (That might be a challenge!)

EDIT: Fixed a few small problems. All should be good now! :D

LD19: It’s done! More or less.

Well, my entry “Introspect” is done.  Kinda.  Mostly.  I did hit most of my goals this time, but due to a family holiday get-together, I wasn’t able to entirely complete the game.  But unlike my last two Ludum Dare entries, it is playable all the way to the end.

You can explore the level and collect all three abilities for your alien character.  There are some unusual dead-ends in the levels which would have contained pieces of the character’s story and purpose.

Click on the image to view my submission.  If that doesn’t work for some reason, here’s a direct link to the playable game.

Updated with 3 minutes to spare! I added a title tune and a Memory Orb pickup tune. :)

Well I’ve given up. Couldn’t get any kind of decent gameplay together so it turned out to be just a crappy looking opengl demo. :|

Well atleast it was good practice. Maybe I’ll try again another time and be better prepared. :)

… for a definition of “Finished” that doesn’t include the next couple of weeks spent balancing, tweaking, adjusting the art, adding more data, revising the graphics engine…

windows binary: https://github.com/downloads/painquin/LD19/LD19-quin.zip

source code: https://github.com/painquin/LD19

It’s Open Source and I intend to use it as a starting point for LD20.

DONE!

Well, I wasn’t able to do as much I would have liked, thanks to power and internet outages, but I’m still pretty happy with the final product (gameplay is a bit slow, but it looks pretty…).

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-19/?action=preview&uid=1503

I might keep working on this (after some sleep… ) and add some of the gameplay stuff I wanted (namely sharks and some fun little gadgets like sonar and stuff).

Here’s a final screenshot:

I’ll link my timelapse in a while..

Finished my game In the Darkness I Shall Fall!

Wow, can’t believe I finished my game! And I think it might actually be sorta fun! That has to be a first ;)

I have to thank Unity. I probably worked about 16-20 hours on the game. Spent most of the time designing levels with 3ds Max and testing them in Unity. So much fun to build a game this way. Music and sound effects were created using Cubase 5 and Omnisphere. My voice was recorded with Soundbooth CS5 and a Shure microphone. I sketched the intro screen with a pencil and scanned it into photoshop and then ran it through a filter.

It was cool because I had time to try to do all the things I like to do, such as pencil art and music composition. Unity REALLY makes a difference in a 48 hour setting.

So far I just have the Windows version. If you like Marble Madness, you might like it. Will try to create other versions later.

Try it Here:

Eureka! Vaults of Knowledge – done and done

Posted by
Sunday, December 19th, 2010 6:04 pm

Well, that was a marathon, especially for an old guy like me. I’m frankly amazed how much can get done in 48 hours, particularly during those hours when there are no distractions.

You can play the game on the web (if you have Java) here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1930531/LD19/eureka/index.html

Windows:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1930531/LD19/eureka/eureka.windows.zip

Mac:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1930531/LD19/eureka/eureka.osx.zip

Linux:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1930531/LD19/eureka/eureka.linux.zip

This is what it looks like.

The end game is fairly close to what I imagined, although it really could do with a lot of polish and balancing. Given that it’s a typing game, I don’t think it’s going to see a port to a phone any time soon, although it’d probably work on a larger tablet or an iPad.

Finally, I would like to thank my wife and daughter for putting up with me, because I haven’t been able to give them much attention, other than the occasional, “please play-test my game!” Tomorrow (or is it today?) I have a day off, and if the weather permits, we’re all going to get out of the house and spend some quality family time together.

Finished, sort of

I finished my entry but not quite to the standard I would have liked. Last night my insomnia kicked into full swing and I ended up spending 6 of my 8 hours sleep just laying in bed. So not only did I essentially waste 6 hours, I’ve been so tired today it’s been a major struggle to get stuff done.

Still, I achieved what I wanted to, I made a game in AS3 for the first time and I implemented ‘Worms’ style terrain destruction. It’s a shame I didn’t have any time for sounds, title screens, fancy game over screens, music, etc etc, but I do quite like my little game, so I’ll probably eventually come back to it, even if it’s just for a week to tighten everything up. The engine isn’t perfect either, there are still some graphical glitches and collision problems, so I’d like to come back to that at some point. Who knows, maybe even after a good nights sleep I’ll fancy working on it and submitting it to the jam.
