I like the theme quite a lot just for making a game, but I think I’d be disappointed if it were chosen for the Ludum Dare. Much of the fun of the Ludum Dare, at least for me, is not knowing anything about your product at the start. I’ve put far too much thought into how evolution can be used in a game to truly create something spontaneously.

I don’t understand the hate for this theme. It’s such a broad and easy to work with theme! Apart from the more obvious interpretation, there’s interpretations along the lines of improvement, advancement, changes over time, progression, and many more. Several games that exist would fit along these ideas nicely!

To be fair, it’s an awesome theme compared to some of those that made the shortlist this time

Kittens? Hitchhiking? Bondage? Relaxing? Smoking? Surgery?

Some of those are really scraping the bottom of the theme barrel….

And every time, I’ve been voting down Evolution…

I’m sure there must be a few people with awesome Evolution ideas that they’ve been planning for several years now… but for the rest of us, I’m still convinced that it’s just too difficult a theme for a 48hr compo – which would cause a whole lot of people to drop out!
