Final Sprint

Posted by
Sunday, April 25th, 2010 2:48 pm

After only one or two hours of coding this morning, I wrote a small text adventure. My idea is that you’re in an island with ancient ruins and you want to explore the main dungeon of the isle, but it’s too dark and you don’t have anything on you, so you must find something to make light.

Yeah, I know it’s a bit of a mess, but that’s all I could come up with in so short time.

Now that I got home I’ll do a sprint in these final hours to see if I get at least some kind of game.

Back home and dinner

Just got back home and am feeling optimistic about completing what I currently have. It will most likely end up with no sound or music but oh well! I just ordered Thai for dinner and am going to dive right in and try to get some work done.

One thing that I’ve learned between this LD and the last one I was in, is that rushing to get something done in a semi hackish way doesn’t really save you time. I’ve spent quite a few hours hunting bugs in my code because I quickly through something together without completely thinking it through. That’s time I could have spent doing sound or adding graphics. Next time, I am going to be more aware of this and endeavor to think out the design more instead of trying to change things half way through the contest.

Last Few Hours…

Well, with just over four hours left, I’m still tying loose bits of code together… as per usual.

As such, I highly doubt there’ll be much polish at all.. no music, and a very poor chance of a bleepy sound effect in sight!
BUT! I’ve already surpassed the functionality from derelict, as you can actually figure out what’s going on, and get some feedback ;)
It’s still got some niggles to work out… but I’ve got my Win32 engine build done ( took about an hour, holy hell… shouldn’t have bothered, really ) and the Hud interfaces are up and working as well!

Another screenshot:
Picture of the HUD in operation, giving some unit feedback!

Here’s hoping I’m posting in a few hours with a completed build!
Really enjoyed working on this :)

Still in the game!

Still participating!  Unfortunately, due to interruptions (including a rather nasty storm!), my progress hasn’t been so great.  I had a good start, but the last 24 hours has been awful!

You can see my progress below.  Everything is working, there just needs to be a game. :)   You can launch fireballs at the other god’s island, and the AI will do the same back to you, but the mechanics are still mostly not there.

“progress” report

hey all,

after about 10 hours working, mostly last night (didn’t get started until saturday evening), here is what I have now..

Windsurfing !

ld17_arif 1

it’s not super-pretty but I hope the controls will be smooth (anyone has ever played sail simulator ?).

Controls are: gamepad, left joystick: feet: turn/bank on x axis (+ lift on y axis), right joystick: hands: control the sail left/right and front/back.

From those simple control you should be able to control that board, approximately as in real life (to go towards the wind, bank feet + move sail to rear, etc.)

I’ll continue for the remaining hours, mostly to get the accurate position/attitude of the board on the wave and wake particles of course :)

Game idea 1

I won’t be entering any code, but I had two interesting ideas that I considered making something of. Here’s a rough sketch of the first one.

boatcarfish

The core mechanic has you driving a boat/car hybrid through a kind of archipelago landscape. There’s a jump button, and with each jump you transform between boat and car. It would probably be allowed to switch again in mid-air if you find that you will end up landing on the wrong kind of terrain. Landing inappropriately would lead to explosion and restart/respawn. The transformation would occur as an animated flip/roll along the length axis of the vehicle, so in theory it could actually be built as a car with a boat “on its back”.

Hopefully driving this contraption would pretty much be enough fun to entertain for a while. There would be some nice skidding physics, with the boat having less grip than the car. A bit like my old netboats game.

For added gameplay though, I figured maybe you could be fishing with a trailing line, gathering fish from schools/swarms that roam the waters and casually try to avoid you. You could add any number of fish to the line, but it would also add mass that would make it harder to control movement, and it would also attract sharks that want to eat the fish and/or you.

As an extra twist, to incorporate the land areas and encourage you to actually drive from time to time, I had a weird idea that you could get on land and drag the fish around as bait to lure tigers from the shrubbery, and catch those on the line as well. In the end, you would head back home to a meat market (X) where you score based on the catch/combo.

Not exactly sure how the various elements would play out in the end, but it seemed like it could be a bit of oldschool arcade fun. The playfield would be much larger than indicated on the sketch, with some areas of alternating land/water/land which would be tricky to navigate without losing a lot of speed or crashing. Perhaps seagulls could be chasing you as an incentive to keep moving quickly.

Crashing

Posted by
Sunday, April 25th, 2010 2:28 pm

My energy levels are falling pretty rapidly.  I got my ships to behave in a semi-realistic fashion, but I don’t know how much more I can do.  I’m pretty much exhausted- the prednisone high has worn off and the liquid diet has not been enough to keep me going.

Still shooting to submit something by 9, even if it’s not much.

Gave up, but here’s what I’ve got:

I’m not going to finish my game. I think I bit off more than I could chew. It actually kinda paralyzed me for a good portion of the compo, because I would feel like making an RTS in a traditional way would take too much time, so I didn’t want to embark on that, but then I didn’t come up with a simplified solution, so I ended up spending the time tweaking some unimportant thing like making a volcano. For viewing the volcano, I recommend turning the camera to a more horizontal view with the middle mouse button. The volcano is to the left of the starting position.

So here’s what I did manage to finish: http://dump.pekuja.com/pekuja_ld17.html

I’d appreciate any comments on the music. I don’t compose a lot so any critique or tips would be appreciated. The loop was made using DrPetter’s Musagi.

I give up

Sorry, I’m not happy with how the game has turned out. I’m not willing to submit it in it’s current state.

See you all next time.

I’m finished!!

Hoooraaay!

I though I would never end… but my game, Island Assault, is finished.

A platformer with a pirate, treasures, coins, jellyfishes, extrange flying balls… and contradictions to physic laws.

Hope you like it :D

See you in the next Ludum Dare!

Day 3: Oh man the Map!

completely changed how you get to different islands, have a look!

LD17_twelve The three islands! the red dots represent the landing area(?) to the island, clicking them takes you there, the skulls just “show” where the pirate caves are, the circles turn green and a red NO symbol appears on the skulls when you clear that island’s dungeon.

Next up on my todo list is a shop, health potions, health potions… more health potions. Once i’m done the rest of the menu stuff after that, I’ll take the rest of the time polishing it p and adding music!

Title screen-check.

Looking like its going to be c64/pixel graphics and music, and will be a art game (sorry)

Thanks for the support people wh commented on my last post.

Phoo…

Well, next time, I’ll know better. Work on engine while waiting on theme. Bleh.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and submit something. But I doubt it.

What with an hour and a half before church. And that lasting at least a couple-three hours, I’m outta time. I’ll keep plugging away at something. Just think what if knytt had a jet pack for jumping, and a plane with missing parts. And you get the idea. Rats.

Booya! Pleochorism submitted!

Tropical Vampire – KavuDX

main menu

It’s finally done, after 4 days of work in art, music and pseudo-codding (goddamn you drag and drop interface), I’ve finally finished my first game.

It’s a really short and crappy one, it’s not creative, it’s not pretty, the music was done in my broken guitar using my $5 microphone… But it was all done by me, and that feels great!

Thanks for everyone here in the community, who helped me from the very beggining, inspiring me, to the very end (showing me where to host the game).

I hope the next LD comes soon, so I can do an even better game!

By the way, info on the game:

VAMPIRE ISLANDS!

You wake up in the middle of a desert beach, with no memories of anything whatsoever, the only thing you know is that the graphics are really poorly made, and there might be a vampire stalking you…

What sort of vampire lives in a place with so much sun? A tropical vampire, also known as Panvire.

Controls:

Use the mouse to click around.

Press M to turn off the music. (kindoff)

Dark music + 7 segment digits

Full menu: beacons, boats, teleport towers and shelters

Full menu: beacons, boats, teleport towers and shelters

Yay for digits made of OpenGL primitives!

Also, I needed a break from the coding frenzy, and wrote some music for the game. Since the game might very well never end up being a game, you can listen to the track here.

EDIT: perfectionism. Music is better like this.
