Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the more you mess with your game the less fun the game becomes?  This Mini Ludum Dare I decided to skip good programming practices and just hack stuff together to get gameplay up and running quickly.  The problem is, many of these messy ad-hoc solutions are now causing me trouble.

I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but I think I may take a break from this project.  If/when I pick it up again I will most likely do a complete rewrite of the code.

Oh, that’s too bad. Your game looked so cool.

Ah well, these things don’t always turn out. I still love that animated gif though. :)

I want to try it at least :/

  4. Ok Jonny, I’ll let you try what I have, but if you were hoping to blow things up with a barrage of missiles it may be a little disappointing.

    Download: http://temp.natewm.com/prog/exciting_biking.zip

    Requires Python and PyGame

    Controls:
    While on ground:
    Up/Down – Change Lanes
    Left – Wheelie
    z – Accelerate

    While in air:
    Left/Right Rotate

    Poor landings slow you down.
Really bad landings make you crash and gives you damage.
Wheelies give you a little boost.
Wheelie too far and you will flip over and become damaged.
Flips in the air give you a boost.
Hitting walls will damage your bike.
Land mines are currently the only enemies. Hitting them gives you damage.
Fill the damage meter and you will explode.

The finish line stops the timer, but the track currently doesn’t really end. The only way to start over is by hitting escape and running the game again.

You can earn score by jumping, flipping, and making good landings.
Score is currently meaningless. In fact, because of how bouncy the bike is at low speeds while on hills you can earn a lot of points just by slowly up a ramp — it thinks your jumping and landing over and over again. This is one of the things that needs to be fixed.

That was at least as exciting as the original. I’m not disappointed at all :)
Thanks for sharing it. I look forward to more when you get to it.
