LD#16 Tentative Date and Mini Poll
Hey everybody,
For Ludum Dare 16, we’re looking at December 11th-13th weekend. I’ll be sending out a proper announcement e-mail this weekend, but I wanted to get some initial feedback.
December has always been a tricky month to schedule. Some people have exams to deal with, others have work, and many have family holidays and gatherings to consider. Nearly any weekend we choose is going to have problems. For myself even, the first weekend is a little too tight for my tastes.
So, I’m looking to hear some thoughts.
As far as I know there’s no game industry or notable demoscene events conflicting with that date… not that I’ve checked.
With that date, Christmas falls on Friday before the usual 2 week voting ends. That’s a hard date to avoid entirely, unless we were to start on the first weekend. So, an idea of mine is to do 3 weeks of voting this time. That way there’s room to do your family thing, then come back and play a few games. Not to mention, we’ve been averaging well over 100 games these past 2 competitions, so a little more time may be appreciated.
That’s what is on my mind. Do share any comments if you have them.
Thanks,
- Mike Kasprzak (PoV)
I really like the idea of three weeks for voting. I think that will help with the votes, and indeed let everyone work around their schedule. That weekend is probably the best choice. Hopefully with enough lead time, those with finals or other commitments can study and do what they need to do ahead of time so they can devote as much as possible of the 48 hours to LD.
I second the idea of three weeks for voting — playing, rating, and leaving feedback on each entry has been particularly grueling for the last two compos. I’d agree that Dec. 11-13 is probably the best, too — any closer and it’s, well, too close; any later and we’re going to lose a lot of folks for Christmas & related holidays.
three weeks of voting sounds like a great idea, it might get a little messy in later months where the compo is over a weekend later in the month and voting runs over a miniLD. but for now at least I think it’s ideal
Cant do that weekend. Placebo are playing in Manchester
I cast my vote for the following weekend of the 18th-20th since my finals will be over then. Otherwise I can just adapt pong or breakout to whichever theme we go with.
Dec 11-13th seems perfect, and the 3 week voting for december seems great too. Any later than that and it would cause some real difficulties with the holidays for a lot of people.
I vote for December 18-20. The weekend of 11-13 is going to be during finals season. I figure 25-27 is out of the question, so maybe (just throwing out a possible alternative here) one option would be to move it to the first weekend in January? Maybe do some kind of New Year’s Ludum Dare thing? We’re going to be up all night anyway
That sounds fine for me, though we don’t plan that far in the future ’round our parts.
About 3 week voting: I thought 2 weeks was suspenseful enough
How about at the end of each day, week, or whatever, you can see everybody’s current standings based on the ratings that have been given so far? That’d be sweet!
I completely agree with December 18-20 being better…
I’d love to be in the competition, but I don’t want LD to collide with exams (last one for me is dec. 17).
Dec 11-13 is good for me, immediately follows finals. The weekend after that could be even better, that’d give me a week to put together an opengl kit. Three weeks of voting sounds good for the typically busy holiday season.
18-20 would be nice, as it’s the start of my 2 weeks off for xmas!
But the weekend before is probably do-able
Like many other people it seems Dec. 11-13 would work for me but 18-20 would be even better
Okay, I’m noticing a pattern here. Check out the latest news for a proper multiple choice survey.
