I just want to throw this out there for consideration.

Monthly theme. You (the entrant) pick a free weekend during the month and do it. We try to put extra emphasis on the first and last weekends, just 'cause they're the most convenient (and last chance).

So generally speaking, it's an 'open date' non competition, where you know the theme in advance (with special considerations for weekend starting months).

Thoughts?

Yeah, pymike, spoken like a true coder! (I mean yeah as in sgstair is right, not agreement with pymike!) Art and sound deserve an equal place at the table, one way or the other.

It seems that the rule thing is the sticking point for most, and I like the idea of giving the host a little more to do than just name a theme, so why not like phil says - it's another aspect the host can decide. Maybe one month the challenge would even be "Take one of your unfinished (or finished) games and make it the exact opposite game that it currently is."

That sounds kind of fun. And it's not like anybody can use the excuse "I don't have any unfinished games!"

I like the idea.
pymike: I don't see the point to relaxing the rules just for resources. I favor either no relaxation, or the described "full" relaxation.

I think, don't "by default" relax the rules, but if the compo host wants to adjust 'em a bit for their month they can.

I think the only nice rules change would be to let people use pre-made media (like music, sounds, gfx, etc.)

My 2c: don't relax the rules. They are good as they are. The rest I'm fine with (host picking theme, etc).
